Students taking advantage of the Bruce Recreation Center gym join with Tennessee Rollerz BC President Kevin Newman, Bruce Recreation Center Director Stuart Edmonds, BRC volunteers Terrance Ward and Mark Thompson, and Miranda Miller of the Tennessee Rollerz Elegant and Divine Social Club to promote the upcoming Taking Back Our Community celebration. The two-day event will take place at the Bruce Recreation Center, Friday and Saturday, June 12 and 13.
This weekend, for the fifth year in a row, residents of Dyersburg will join together at the Bruce Recreation Center for the Taking Back Our Community celebration.

The annual event will begin with Youth Night at 6 p.m., on Friday, June 12. The evening, led by youth from local churches, will include performances of skits, songs, praise dance and mime. Featured speakers will address what youth should expect in the college experience.

"We will have different surrounding congregations coming together (on Friday evening)," said Director of the Bruce and Future City Recreation Centers and minister Stuart Edmonds.

On Saturday, the Tennessee Rollerz Bike Club and Tennessee Rollerz Elegant and Divine Social Club will present children's events from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., including obstacle courses and kid-friendly games throughout the afternoon and early evening.

This is the third year that the Tennessee Rollerz has participated in the Taking Back Our Community celebration at the Bruce Community. The group also hosts Summerfest each year, a similar event located in Union City.

"Every child that registers will receive a sack lunch and a treat bag," said Tennessee Rollerz BC President Kevin Newman.

Saturday's registration will take place from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m.

"We want everyone to come out and have a good time," said Edmonds. "We invite the whole community."

The fifth annual Taking Back Our Community celebration will take place Friday and Saturday, June 12 and 13, at the Bruce Community Center.

How did the community get away in the first place so that now you have to take it back?...........

CAN'T PAY MIKE P ANY ATTENTION....HE'S STILL HAS THE BACKWOOD MENTALITY.....HE MIGHT NEED TO TAKE BACK HIS NEIGHBORHOOD ALSO.(ALL THE PROBLEMS THAT CHICAGO HAS......WHAT NERVE...)...TRUST ME, BRUCE COMMUNITY ISN'T THE ONLY ONE IN NEED..

I SEE EVERYONE WANTS SING THE PRAISE OF KEVIN NEWMAN AND HIS FAMILY. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE YOUNG PEOPLE THAT HELPED OUT LIKE THE TENNESSEE ROLLERZ SPROCKETS ATTENDED FRIDAY AND SATURDAY AND HELPED BUT I DONT SEE NONE OF THEM IN THE PICTURE NOR DO I SEE ANY OF THEIR NAMES MENTIONED. BUT YET YOU HAVE ONE OF THE BIGGEST AND OLDEST DRUG DEALER IN THE PICTURE. SO I GUESS YOU ARE SAYING SALE YOUR DRUGS AS LONG AS YOU GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY AND YOU ARE FRIENDS OR FAMILY MEMBERS OF OURS. THINGS ARENT WHAT THEY ALWAYS SEEM TO BE.

Krama,,,that a real low blow....The reason Kevin is getting publicity is because he is spearheading the idea. The whole event is to cater to the young people..Its is shameful that we as black people just hate to see someone else doing something positive...Pitch in and be a part of it...There room for everyone...Everyone knows who you are talking about in the pic and its not kevin...I don't know if that individual sells drugs, but if he does and you allow it in your community, then you are at as biggest fault as he is..

DMASE..........I WAS SAYING THE KIDS THAT HELPED SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED ALSO. AND I CARE LESS ABOUT KEVIN NEWMAN BECAUSE FOR YEARS HE HAS ACTED LIKE HE IS BETTER THAN EVERYONE . AND NO ONE SAID IT WAS KEVIN THAT WAS SELLING DRUGS. BUT YOU KNEW WHO I WAS TALKING ABOUT YOU AND EVERYONE IN THE COMMUNITY AND THE POLICE KNOWS WHAT HE IS. BUT IF THEY WANTED TO DO THE RIGHT THING THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD KEVIN, MIRANDA, THE YOUTH GROUP THAT THEY ARE HELPING SUPPORT AND SOME KIDS FROM THE COMMUNITY AND MR EDMONDS AND OTHER TR IN THE PICTURE. THE TENNESSEE ROLLERZ SPROCKETS HAVE WORKED VERY HARD TO GET IN THE GROUP AND HAS HELPED IN THE COMMUNITY ALSO. BUT HAVING A DRUG DEALER IN THE PICTURE WITH PEOPLE THAT ARE TRYING TO TAKE BACK THEIR COMMUNITY IS DEFEATING THE PURPOSE.

C'mon krama...i see at least 4 kids in the picture....i never known kevin to have beef with anyone.....this was all about the children....I didn't see kevin taking any credit..i don't know 4 sure if this guy sells drugs, but if you know that he does, press the issue.take a stand in ur community..this is what this is about....,but if he is trying to do good, don't knock him...It could be his turning point in his life.....every christian in life is remembered by what he or she used to do or be, but not who they are....Is it really the pic ur concerned about, or u just don't like kevin?..

DMASE-----THATS RIGHT FOUR KIDS, BUT THERE ISNT ONE OF THE TENNESSEE ROLLERZ SPROCKETS IN THE PICTURE AT ALL. AND THEY HELPED WITH THE EVENT ALSO. THEY ARE HAVING CAR WASHES, THEY HELPED WITH THE AMERCIA CLEAN UP DAY. GIVE THEM SOME CREDIT ALSO. IN ORDER TO GET OUR COMMUNITY BACK TO WHERE WE ARE PROUD OF IT AND ARENT AFFAIRD T0 WALK THE STREETS WE HAVE TO START WITH THE CHILDREN. YOU GOT KIDS STANDING OUTSIDE OF A HOUSE RIGHT WHEN YOU CROSS THE TRACKS THAT SIT THERE ALL DAY AND SELL DRUGS. NOW FOR THE DRUG DEALER EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT HE IS AND IF YOU DONT YOU MUST BE FRIEND AND TRYING TO PROTECT HIM OR YOU ARE NOT FROM DYERSBURG. ITS THE OLDER DEALERS THAT GOT THEIR KIDS OUT HERE SELLING THE DRUGS AND THEN THEY GETTING THEIR CHILDREN TO RECRUIT OTHER YOUNG KIDS TO DO IT. ALL IM SAYING IS DONT BE AGAINST SOMETHING AND THEN SOCIALIZE WITH THE CRIMINALS IN THE CITY.

I don't live in dyersburg, but i hear the same news as everyone else. All i'm saying is, if you know where the dope spots are, and you see these illegal transactions, do something about it...Everybody knows somebody that does the wrong thing....Dyersburg is just that small..Its up to the citizens to decide, do they want their city cleaned up or not. ya gotta vote the right people in office first....get rid of your corrupted cops, judges, second, and establish a REAL neighborhood watch program....see ya on the next one krama....too much time on this....i respect ya opinion......
