Three plead guilty to shooting Haywood sheriff's son

Three men accused of shooting the Haywood County sheriff's son last summer pleaded guilty this week in Lauderdale County Circuit Court.

The men were accused of killing Brian Bond, 28, of Brownsville, and shooting at three more persons in the vehicle with him. Bond was the son of Haywood County Sheriff Melvin Bond. The shooting reportedly occurred Aug. 9 in the vicinity of Highway 19 East near Lauderdale Middle School.

Terry Copeland, who was 21 when he was arrested last year, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of second-degree murder, an amended charge of attempted second-degree murder, two additional charges of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. Additional charges of first-degree felony murder, employment of a firearm during the commission of a felony and prior felony conviction were all dismissed.

Terry Copeland was sentenced to 20 years in prison on the murder charge. He was classified as a "violent offender" and must serve 100 percent of that sentence. He was sentenced to eight years in prison on each of the attempted murder charges and one year on the handgun charge. All of the sentences are to be served concurrently.

Sequna Copeland, who was 19 when he was arrested last year, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of facilitation of second-degree murder. Additional charges of first-degree felony murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of attempted second-degree murder and employment of a firearm during the commission of a felony were all dismissed.

Sequna Copeland was sentenced to eight years in prison and must serve at least 30 percent of that sentence before parole can be considered.

Ranard Webster, who also was 19 when he was arrested, pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact of second-degree murder. He is to be sentenced Friday, June 12.
