Election commission's chairman announces run for association president; plan to locate voters to be implemented

Friday, June 26, 2009
During this month's Dyer County Election Commission meeting Chairman Joe Enoch announced he had been nominated to run for the office of president of the Tennessee Association of County Election Officials (TACEO). Enoch served in the position from 2005-2007. The election will take place next week at the TACEO seminar in Memphis. Enoch stated he would appreciate it if the other commissioners would vote for him at the seminar.

Kenna Lacy, election commission clerk, presented the commission with a plan for correcting voter's addresses. The Help America Vote Act (HAVA) requires counties to have this plan every two years. This federal law was initiated to keep voters in their correct district. The plan calls for a verification card to be mailed to each registered voter. The card cannot be forwarded. If the voter has moved, the card is sent back to the election commission. If the voter is found, a confirmation card is mailed asking them to change their address. The postage is paid by the election commission for sending the cards out and the return postage on the confirmation card.

Enoch informed the commissioners about this year's budget. Because there will not be an election this year the budget was reduced.

Enoch and the commissioners discussed a legislation that would delay the change of voting machines until 2010. The commission agreed this bill should be delayed in order to save the state money as well as provide enough time to train new election administrators.

More unnecessary bureaucratic expense. Why not simply have voters verify citizenship and update their address when they vote. Ah yes, but we have that federal law to comply with. Why am I not surpised?
