Dyersburg fireworks show scheduled again for DHS

Wednesday, July 1, 2009
The city of Dyersburg will host its annual fireworks display at Dyersburg High School again this year. The show will begin a little after 9 p.m., on Saturday, July 4.

The show, traditionally held at Dyersburg State Community College, was moved to the parking lot on the DHS campus last year due to fallout on the roofs of several new buildings on the DSCC Dyersburg campus. This year, the show will again be featured on the DHS campus, set off between the baseball and softball fields.

Residents may view the fireworks from the DHS parking lot or across the highway in the parking lots of Green Village and the Yates-General Appliance warehouse. Views of the holiday display should also be available from DSCC, Okeena Park and sites along Parkview and the Highway 51 Bypass.

"We are hoping to have a bigger finale than ever," said pyrotechnist and local attorney Gerald Ketchum, who has been involved in the fireworks show for over 20 years.

A rain date has been set for Sunday, July 5, but Ketchum said the show will only be postponed if it is raining at the time the fireworks are supposed to be set off.

The traditional fireworks sponsored by the Reelfoot Lake Tourism Council will not be held this year, but the Reelfoot Lake Inn has planned an event on Saturday evening that includes live music and fireworks.

Guests of the inn will be treated to the show as part of their room fee. Residents who would like to view the show from the inn's parking lot will be charged $5 per car.

Other features provided in the Reelfoot Lake Inn's 4th of July Celebration package include free hot dogs and hamburgers, door prizes, free continental breakfast, music and karaoke, games, pool fun and the inn's first "Big Bang" Firework Show. The room package is $65.

Personally, I did not like this site nearly as well last year. No matter where we relocated to, the view was blocked partially by trees. Maybe we just didn't pick the perfect spot, although we drove to several different locations to try to get a better view. We never had this problem at the college site.

I also drove to different locations last year, and missed them all. Made me sad!

What would be wrong with the Fairgrounds / Dixie Youth Ball Park area? I agree, last year there were too many obstacles to viewing clearly. We went home before they were over.

DSCC was a much better location for this

I agree Uh... The Fairgrounds/Dixie Youth would be a better spot... i have sit on the old penal farm & watched them before the development of the fairgrounds before they were moved to DHS (Go Trojans!!!)

This would open up more options for the Greater Dyersburg/Dyer County Community, also. Prehaps a day of live music at the amphitheater, artist displays and even a Paul Revere Pony ride or something could rear it's head & everyone could have a day long picnic, celebration and good time. A Minuteman display from the National Guard Unit... even coordinate with the new Downtown Riverfront Park (perhaps a Steamboat Race on the Might North Forked Deere River).

Geezz... a Festival!!! imagine that!

Is the city sure we can afford this fireworks show? Aren't there some employees who should be getting another raise?

In the past, we could see them at the college from our deck on Oakview. Many people watched the fireworks display from the Kroger parking lot. DHS isn't that much further, so surely we will still be able to see them since they go up so high into the air. We went to the Trimble fireworks display two years ago and some fool brought his little dog. The poor little thing was terrified and completely freaked out!
