Teens sentenced for theft, burglary

In Dyer County Circuit Court May 4-5:

* Eric D. Brooks, 18, 326 Sellers Drive, was granted pretrial diversion on a charge of theft of property in excess of $1,000. A related charge of aggravated burglary was dismissed. He was accused of forcibly entering a home on Whitney Young and taking a gun, jewelry, a home theater system and $80 cash. He was placed on probation for two years and ordered to pay $899 in court costs and $1,300 restitution. He is forbidden to contact the victim.

* James Glisson, also known as Rick James, address unavailable, was not prosecuted on a charge of selling more than half a gram of cocaine.

* David Lee Hardin, 27, 1970 Peachtree, pleaded guilty to forgery and felony failure to appear.

On the forgery charge, he was sentenced to a year in prison and ordered to pay $295.52 restitution to Metro Staffing, 1130 Hwy 51 Bypass.

On the failure to appear charge, he was sentenced to a year in prison and immediately placed on probation.

The sentences are to be served consecutively.

* Calvin Dean Martin, 36, 405 Third St. in Union City, pleaded guilty to attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud. He had been placed on pretrial diversion for this charge in May 2008, but his diversionary period was terminated. He was sentenced to two years in prison.

* Rhonda Pleasant Rogers, 46, 901 Finley St., pleaded guilty to four counts of forgery. She was sentenced to four years in a community corrections program on each count; she had been in jail from Nov. 5 to May 4. Her sentences are to be served concurrently. She was ordered to pay restitution of $70 to T&B Grocery, 924 Finley St.; $47.83 to JR Mart, 1025 Harrell Ave.; $50.23 to JR Mart; and $270 to First Citizens National Bank.

* Jeremy Jerell White, 19, address unavailable, pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated burglary and theft of property in excess of $1,000. He was accused of entering a Dyer County home on Sept. 26 and taking a dozen guns and two buck knives. He was granted judicial diversion, placed on supervised probation for three years and forbidden to contact the victims.

* Patricia B. Wright, 45, 261A Gay St. in Ripley, pleaded guilty to theft of property less than $500. She was sentenced to 11 months, 29 days in jail.

Well, wonder why the last woman got such a

long time in jail for theft of less than $500

but the 19 year old steal over $1000. worth

and gets only probation?? I guess you can sell

a little bit of cocaine and not get prosecuted at all.

The logic behind the sentences for the various crimes eludes me. How will any of the people pay restitution when they were broke enough to steal or pass bad checks? No jail time for others? No prosecution for selling cocaine? It's time for us to get some new judges.
