| A representative of Kroger's engineering department was present at Thursday's regular meeting of the Dyersburg Planning Commission to present a site plan for a new fuel center in the parking lot of its Dyersburg store. Of the 110 stores in Kroger's Delta Region, 55 presently have fuel stations. The Dyersburg store is one of several with plans to build fuel centers this year. |
Plans for Kroger to add a new fuel center to the parking lot of its Dyersburg store are currently under way.
Members of the city of Dyersburg Municipal-Regional Planning Commission were presented with a site plan to construct a gas station on the northernmost corner of the Kroger parking lot at Thursday's regular meeting.
The project was recommended for approval by both Community Planner Kim Morgan and City Engineer Brad Davis after studying the issues of drainage, fire hydrants, traffic and utilities. Steve Sheridan with the Kroger Engineering office was on hand to answer any questions from the commission.
Freeman Dudley moved to approve the site plan, pending approval of the city engineer. Davis has not yet signed the plans, but informed members of the planning commission that he does not foresee any setbacks with the project. The motion was seconded and approved by all members present.
Joe Bell, Manager of Marketing and Public Affairs of the Kroger Delta Division, said the addition of the fuel center is a way for the Kroger company to provide convenience and rewards to customers of the Dyersburg store, while providing competitively-priced gasoline to all members of the community.
"Of our 110 stores in the Delta Kroger Division, 55 presently have fuel stations," said Bell. "And we have several more planned this year and going forward. We would love to have them in all of our stores, but not all of our stores have the space to accommodate a fuel station. Dyersburg does."
Bell said customers who have Kroger Plus cards or Kroger MasterCards will receive a discount on gasoline ranging from 3 to 15 cents per gallon through the company's points program.
Owning a Kroger Plus card offers a 3-cent discount per gallon on fuel purchased at the new fuel center. When Kroger customers spend money on groceries or prescriptions from the Kroger Pharmacy, they can earn points to bump that discount up to 10-cents per gallon. Residents who have a Kroger MasterCard will receive a 15-cent discount for every $100 worth of groceries purchased.
"It's a way for the consumer to do what they do every day, which is buy groceries, a way we can reward our customers with fuel savings. It's been a great addition to our stores," said Bell. "Our philosophy when we build a gas station is to be competitive with everyone else in that market. We aren't going to charge you 3 cents over and then give you a 3-cent discount."
After approval by the planning commission, the project will go out for bids. Bell said the construction process goes quickly after the bidding.
"It is normally about eight weeks after they put the first shovel in the ground," said Bell. "It's pretty fast. It takes a lot less time to build a fuel center than a grocery store."

really be glad when its put in,maybe i can buy gas in town instead of going to covington to buy. thanks again Krogers
Can we get any more congested in that area? All of the great drivers we have that turn left coming out of Wal-Mart, seems to me there are too many gas stations there now. Guess it really depends upon the placement of it in the parking lot.
Good deal...gives us another alternative on the other side of the road!!! Ever try to make that turn going north to south to Wal-mart, takes forever...with that discount, Kroger will pick up more business hopefully...
Glad to see this coming. As I am traveling to Memphis, Krogers in Covington and Millington always have the lowest price gas...The savings would be even greater with the rewards card. Sorry Wal-Mart, you're just not a cheap as you used to be.
I bet the owner of BP there is ticked. Oh well.
Having the .10 discount for buying $100 in groceries is a nice incentive to shop there.
Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers to Krogers!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope they don't fall in lockstep (pricewise) with the other local gas stations. They are all in cahoots and keep gas prices artifically high because they can. Besides owning the stations, they are also the distributors, haul their own gas and service their own stores. Too bad we don't have a (Covington) Hajjeh's locate in Dyersburg! Today, Sunday (7/12) went to Union City and the price of gas was $2.099/gallon at most of the stations. The highest was $2.129! Caruthersville was $2.039. Walmart in Dyersburg was $2.339.
Only if the prices are competitive I agree with the user they are all in cahoots to keep prices high.
I just want shoppers to be fully aware of the deal with Krogers. (Where I live), you can recieve a $.03 discount per gallon on gas just for having the kroger shopping card scanned when you pump gas. you can recieve $.10 per gallon discount for ONE gas purchase if you spend $100.00 in groceries or if you have 2 perscriptions filled. if you spend $100.00 in groc. each week, you get $.10 off one purchase of gas each week. When the program was instituted at our local Kroger, the promotions were not clear as to how the discounts worked and many people felt as if they were cheated, not knowing how the $.10 discount was applied. Here, the prices are competitive and the discount really helps out.
thats great now dont have to go to jackson to get the 10 cent discount when they get it built
That's Gibson Roberts that owns the BP right beside Kroger. Local family. That means the money you pay them stays local. Also true with the Castlelaw family. Sure, you're getting cheap gas, but you're not supporting the local economy and local families.
Maybe now they put a traffic light in at Pennell and Lake Rd.
Yet another gas station? Why?
Good question, RandomX. The only worse news would be if Kroger opened an auto parts department.
great! as a kroger customer i would hope they would consider placing the station on the southeastern corner; in my opinion it would be a natural place (pennell lane @ dodge'em blvd)
even better if they would include one of those coin-operated car washes), could be placed to support BP and Kroger customers, alike(kinda like my grandma used to say "kill two birds w/1 stone").
the traffic problem is the bigger than any other. i fear that a tragedy is in store unless the entrance of big mac isn't changed in order to get the customer off dodge'em blvd instead of lining up in far right lane--especially the at breakfast-time,
I'm glad to see it. Maybe they can be competetive and help give us lower gas prices...
i am glad to see this coming because i DO NOT buy gas at walmart, walmart only hurts this town and there gas isnt that cheap when i can go to union city an buy gas at raceway for 2.11. Where is our mayor and alderman when we need them to do their JOBS? Please answer that question MAYOR AND ALDERMAN.
