In a statement released to the State Gazette, Rep. Judy Barker said she would deny the increase and return it to the state of Tennessee.
"I cannot speak for the other representatives, but for myself I am not comfortable receiving this increase," said Barker. "Our state revenues continue to decline, which is unheard of in our history. Unemployment figures with more possible layoffs, and budget cuts will be the major considerations of our next legislative session. I was elected to represent the views of the people of Northwest Tennessee and to help improve the quality of life in Obion, Dyer, and Lake counties. Any increase this session in my reimbursement will be returned by me to the State of Tennessee."
Rep. Craig Fitzhugh holds the same sentiment and said he too would return his increase. He said before this occurred he was going to file a bill to reverse any increases, but legislative legal staff informed him the State Constitution makes it unconstitutional.
"I was a bit surprised to see this increase," said Fitzhugh. He noted that it didn't seem right to have an increase in the current economic situation.
Fitzhugh added the Legislative Office of Administration makes it possible to send the increase back to the state, which is what he intends to do.
State legislators also receive $1,000 per month for the maintenance of an office area devoted to their legislative work in their homes or elsewhere within their district.

Thank you Judy Barker, you are doing a wonderful job, keep up the good work....
Bravo!
for some strange reason it is my memory that the state legislators were required to vote for increases--that may only be for salary increases, i'm not sure. if that isn't correct, when did these people vote for automatic increases to their expense checks.--they're really sneaky!
