Veterans Day Parade planned for Wednesday

Tuesday, November 10, 2009
The following program for Veterans Day activities will be observed in downtown Dyersburg on the east side of Veterans Square on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

The program will begin at 10:30 a.m. The speaker for the event will be George Winters, commander of the local VFW Post No. 1972 in Dyersburg. Winters is a U.S. Army Veteran and a native of Dyer County. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He is a member of the American Legion Post No. 30 and DAV Chapter 46. He is better known as "the clock man", works part time at FedEx and is involved in community activities and charitable organizations.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. sharp and will proceed down Main Street. Participants in the parade will include the Dyersburg High School Marching Band, Dyer County High School Marching Band, Boy Scout troops, Girl Scout troops, Cub Scouts, Brownies, National Guard units, Veterans of World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq, Afghanistan, and any and all military personnel who wish to participate. Also included, are the Dyer County High School Junior ROTC, Dyersburg Police Department, Dyer County Sheriff's Department, Dyersburg/Dyer County Rescue Squad, Dyersburg and Dyer County Fire Departments, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and anyone else who would like to participate in the parade is invited.

All units will assemble on the upper parking lot of First United Methodist Church at 10:15 a.m.

Any veterans who wish to participate but cannot walk should come to the church parking lot and provision has been made for them to ride together.

Immediately following the parade, dinner will be served at the National Guard Armory for all veterans.

This event is sponsored by American Legion Post No. 30, American Legion Post No. 191, VFW Post No. 1972 and DAV Chapter 46.

Mayor Richard Hill wanted to remind everyone this is a special day because we still have men and women serving the United States on foreign soil defending our freedom.

"Help us to honor all of these heroes and show our support by attending these activities," said Hill.

My wife and I are both veterans and live in Obion county but for years now we go to Dyersburg to take part in Veterans Day activities.Obion county does very little to honor their veterans, and that is sad.No parade,no speeches,no meal for veterans in Obion county, but "light refreshments" are offered.
