Navy Chief Mike Wilkerson (Ret.) (left) reads aloud what each fold of the American flag symbolically represents as members of the Dyer County JROTC do the honors. The ceremony took place during the Newbern Rotary Club's meeting this week. Wilkerson is a Vietnam veteran and brought up the idea to take up a collection to replace the club's old flag. He said the flag is important because it is part of Rotary's closing ceremony. Lt. Col. Fred Eades and First Sgt. Tim McCutchen brought four members of the JROTC to perform the ceremony at Oakview. After the new flag was placed in its stand, the old flag was folded and presented to Wilkerson who spoke on what the flag means to him and others.
