Chairman Eddie Burks took a seat in the audience as members of the commission listened to a request by Dyersburg High School Principal Mickey Mahon to honor Burks with a road named in his honor. Mahon said Burks Beverage has been a tremendous support to the city school system over the years and residents would like to see a permanent tribute to the company for its efforts.
Mayor John Holden moved to rename Huish Road to Burks Place. The street, which runs east of Hoff Road between Caterpillar and Burks Beverage, was built by the city to connect to industrial land to the rear of Caterpillar. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
"I appreciate it," said Burks. "It's quite an honor. It's a great morale builder for our folks and we are very appreciative."
Burks returned to his seat on the commission to address the remainder of the agenda.
Commissioners also voted to approve a rezoning request submitted by Jason Harper that includes two properties adjacent to an established commercial corridor along Lake Road.
City Planner Kim Morgan and City Recorder Gleyn Twilla found no objection to extending the B-2 District. Freeman Dudley moved to approve the request. The motion was seconded and approved.
Also at the meeting, members of the planning commission:
* tabled a petition from Larry Baltimore to rezone four lots from R-3 to B-1 until Baltimore could be present at the meeting. The request was on the agenda, but no one was present to represent the request to planning commission members.
* heard administrative reports, updates on current projects concerning creating and plans for creating an up-to-date zoning map for the city.
