1 of 3 men in Newbern burglary avoids prosecution

Friday, November 27, 2009
Aggravated burglary and theft charges were not prosecuted against a 19-year-old man in Newbern city court on Monday.

Robert Jackson Nanny, 110 W. Johnson in Newbern, was arrested Aug. 25 for burglarizing a woman's home and attempting to sell her jewelry in a pawn shop.

Nanny had no prior record and would qualify for pre-trial diversion, but he'd already taken steps to join the military, his attorney Jimmy Lanier said. The district attorney's office agreed not to prosecute Nanny as long as he entered the military.

Two more men charged in the burglary waived their rights to preliminary hearings on Sept. 28. Their charges have been bound over to the action of a Dyer County grand jury. Codey Ducat, 302 Tyler St. in Newbern, and Dwayne Walls, 2128 Volunteer Blvd. in Dyersburg, face a possible indictment.

Not a bad idea. Let's give Cody and Dwayne an opportunity to join the Army too. It will save the county money and they'll enjoy boot camp.

But still he needs to pay for his crime...thats not really fair 2 the woman whose house he entered.....pay for his crime, then after that, make him hold his military obligation....

I agree sending young men and women who are starting down the wrong path to the military would be an economical alternative to jail. Not to mention, the money that would be saved in the long run by preventing repeat offenders. Give these young adults positive role models!

I think it sounds good at first, but I worry about a convict being in the military. The majority of the military is fine, upstanding men and women. If you throw a problem person in, he is just as likely to commit crimes in the Army as he is as a civilian. It is people like that that give our Armed Forces bad publicity.
