Man gets 8 years in prison for assault with bat; moonshine hauling brings probation

In Dyer County Circuit Court on Oct. 13:

* Wilbert Austin, 64, 5523 Highway 54 W. in Brownsville, pleaded guilty to possessing more than 3 gallons of untaxed alcoholic beverages. He reportedly had about 34 gallons of moonshine in his vehicle in June. His two-year sentence was suspended and he was placed on probation. He was ordered to forfeit all of the alcohol.

* Jacob Allen Crawford, 22, address unavailable, pleaded guilty to two counts of statutory rape. He was accused of sexually penetrating a 14-year-old girl twice in May. Crawford was given concurrent 18-month sentences and forbidden to contact the girl.

* Phillip Lynn Dorse, 32, 1345 Lovejoy Road in Finley, was sentenced to a total of eight years in prison after being convicted of aggravated assault and assault. A related charge of assault was dismissed. He was accused of beating three men with a baseball bat during a fight on July 19, 2008. One of the victims was reportedly flown to The Regional Medical Center in Memphis with a life-threatening head injury.

Dorse was sentenced to eight years in prison on the aggravated assault and 11 months, 29 days in jail on the assault. The sentences are to be served concurrently with each other but consecutively to two prior sentences.

* Nina Perry of 2520 Sleepy Hollow in Monroe, Ga., was not prosecuted for failing to deliver a certificate of title after selling a motorcycle in Dyersburg last year.

* Jeffery Jermain Ross, 21, 220 Bowen Lane, pleaded guilty to selling a counterfeit controlled substance and felony failure to appear. He was sentenced to two years in each count and will serve those terms concurrently with each other and consecutively with a previous sentence.

* Earl Washington, 18, 906 Marlar Road in Caruthersville, Mo., pleaded guilty to possessing more than half an ounce of marijuana with intent to sell. A related charge of evading arrest was dismissed. Washington was sentenced to a year in prison, but the sentence was immediately suspended. He was placed on supervised probation. His $2,000 fine was suspended to $250.
