A resolution to implement a free prescription discount plan offered to city residents through Dyersburg's membership in the National League of Cities is on the agenda of the city board meeting scheduled on Monday, Dec. 7. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Courtroom. Residents interested in participating in the program may visit City Hall or call 1-888-620-1749. [Click to enlarge] |
Dyersburg Mayor John Holden and Human Resources Director Sue Teague recently informed members of the city of Dyersburg's Finance Committee of a new program to offer savings on prescription drugs to Dyersburg citizens.
Residents who are without health insurance, do not have a traditional benefits plan or have prescriptions that are not covered by their insurance may benefit from a free prescription discount card available from the city of Dyersburg in collaboration with the National League of Cities.
The card is free to all Dyersburg residents, regardless of age, income or existing health insurance. Residents using the card may save an average of 20 percent off the regular retail price of prescription drugs at participating pharmacies.
"I'm very excited about this," Teague told committee members at the meeting. "It's administered through Caremark, which is a well-known prescription drug company. Hopefully, this will be a good program for our citizens."
"There is no downside to it," said alderman Bob Kirk, a member of the Finance Committee and a representative of the city in the National League of Cities. "There is no cost to the city. This is a benefit of being a member of the National League of Cities.
Finance Committee Chairman Lewis Norman moved to recommend the full city board adopt a resolution offering the service to the community, with alderman Kevin Chaney adding a second. The motion passed unanimously and will be presented at the city board meeting on Monday, Dec. 7.
"We've got all the cards, posters, (and information) here (at City Hall)," said Holden. "We would like to work with churches and senior citizens' groups and do a lot of advertising to get the word out."
The program is not an insurance policy, but a prescription card that may be used anytime a prescription is not covered by insurance. There are no age or income requirements to participate in the program. Benefits of the program include:
* an average savings of 20 percent
* free enrollment
* no membership fees
* coverage for all family members
* no limits on how many times the card may be used
* no age requirements
* no income requirements
* easy access, with nine out of 10 pharmacies nationwide participating in the program
* coverage of pet medications that are also used to treat a human condition also covered
Those interested in more information may visit Dyersburg City Hall, located at 425 W. Court St., or call 1-888-620-1749.

And guess who is paying for this. All of us that have insurance that already costs an arm and a leg because the drug companies will pass the cost along. Nothing is free. This is just the beginning of socialized medicine. Wake up people!
WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO INSURANCE AND CAN NOT GET ANY???? Ever wonder what they are going to do?????
tellitlikeitis, I can not get insurance....what am I supposed to do????
When you already have health insurance it is easy fo forget about all the people who cannot get insurance. I work as hard as anyone else but have no insurance and can not afford an extra $500 a month.If you are on the side of insurance companies and drug companies then you believe all the scare tactics about healthcare reform. Those companies are spending your money to scare you.
I have health insurance with a prescription card, but I am very glad to see that there will be an option out there for those that don't. I personally know people that go without medications simply because they can't afford it. tellitlikeitis needs to step back and think of those people and the relief they will get from it. Not everyone that doesn't have insurance is sitting around taking hand-outs. Lots of the people that don't have insurance aren't offered it through their employers, or it is so expensive they can't afford it. Give them a break.
You are right tellitlikeitis we do need to wake up but for a different reason. People have forgot how to help each other in this day and time. I have insurance and pay for it dearly every week but I am one of the luck ones. If this program can help just one person it will be worth whatever I paid in one week. Yes there are people out there that take advantage of these programs but there are people out there that just need this extra help. One day tellitlikeitis you may need this help. Can people not believe that there are good things in this world anymore.
