DSCC students help Hispanic children learn to read

Thursday, December 10, 2009
Members of the Dyersburg State Community College Hispanic Awareness Recruitment Team are currently working on a new DSCC service program that will help Hispanic children improve their reading skills in English. The program is called Help Me Read.

Through Help Me Read, adults or children who are in need of English skills are matched with a tutor to help them read in English. Tutoring sessions will be held from 4-5 p.m., each Tuesday and Thursday in the Learning Resource Center on the Dyersburg campus.

While the Help Me Read program will be of service to the area's growing Hispanic community, other nationalities are also welcome to participate. This program will be one of many service-learning projects offered to DSCC students as part of their course work.

International Studies Coordinator Zaira Garcia said the program seeks volunteers to serve as tutors. It is also in need of children's book donations.

In addition to Garcia, DSCC Vice President Mary Ann Sellars, Birgit Northcutt, Teresa Evans, Larenda Fultz, Angela Rood and Teresa Johnson are serving as members of the HART committee.

For more information about the program, or to volunteer or to donate books, please contact Garcia at 286-3377 or garcia@dscc.edu.

AMERICANS NEED SPANISH TEACHERS more than they do! THIS IS NOT RIGHT, more of them than us we are the ones in the DARK!

At least the Hispanics are trying to learn English. They are in America. We speak ENGLISH here not anything else.

Maybe chief_ty20 needs to go to the Dyer County Literacy office if he/she needs help.
