City grants two beer permits; street dept. praised for work during snowstorm

Tuesday, February 2, 2010
The February meeting of the Dyersburg City Board was short and sweet, with aldermen granting two beer permits and hearing aldermen reports in just five minutes.

Two public hearings were held during New Business to award beer permits to Ranjodh S. Boparai, Surat Chatha and Kulwinder Kaur for Yours Gas and Food Mart LLC, located at 610 Tucker St., and to Tony Bacigalupo, Keith Robinson and Richie Gammons for Plantation Restaurant, located at 2100 Clubhouse Drive.

"Based on the investigation conducted by the police department, we see no reason not to award the applicant the permit," said Dyersburg Police Chief Art Huen, who recommended granting both applicants the beer permits.

Bob Kirk moved to award each permit, with Kevin Chaney adding both seconds. Both motions were passed unanimously by board members present. All members of the Dyersburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen were present, except for Charles McCright.

During aldermen reports, Bob Kirk said he had a question for City Treasurer Steve Anderson concerning the audit summary granted to board members in their packets. Kirk's question related to $250,000 in the general fund, budgeted but not yet spent by the court.

Dyersburg Mayor John Holden said Anderson was out sick on Monday and couldn't attend the board meeting. Kirk said he would ask Anderson about the item when he returned to work.

Also in aldermen reports, newly appointed Jewell Horner complimented the City Street Department on their prompt and thorough cleanup of city streets during the recent inclement weather.

"They got out early when it began to snow Friday morning," said Horner.

"The street department began at 2 a.m. on Friday morning and worked straight through the weekend," said Holden.

"And the kids did a good job of cleaning off College Hill," said Bart Williams.

Williams, Freeman Dudley, Kevin Chaney, Dennis Moody and Lewis Norman had nothing to add in aldermen reports.

In Mayor's Comments, Holden strongly urged residents to take advantage of a recent grant received by the city that will help eliminate blighted structures from residential properties at no cost to either the property owner or the city.

"I strongly urge anyone who has a blighted structure on their property to take advantage of this grant," said Holden. "This is a wonderful opportunity to clean up the city at no cost to the owner and no cost to the city."

Those interested in taking advantage of the grant should call Thomas Mullins at City Hall.

The meeting adjourned at 7:05 p.m.
