At the Shelter

Thursday, February 4, 2010
We are pleased to announce that Tag, the Highway 51 dog, has found a forever home with a wonderful family who will love and care for him. We are so grateful to Ann Ramsey, who spent 9 months training and socializing this once feral dog who was terrified of everything and everyone. Her love and patience won him over and he is now thoroughly domesticated, loves living in the house, romping in a fenced yard, enjoys attention and being petted.

We have many more pets at the shelter who are hoping you will pick them to be part of your family. If you are interested in adding a furry friend to your household, please consider a shelter pet. When you adopt a pet from our shelter you save two lives: the one you adopt and the one who takes its place. Take a tour of the shelter and you will be greeted by meows, barking dogs and wagging tails. Everyone loves visitors.

No. 21865, 'Pogo' is a tiny male medium-haired gray and white kitten who was unceremoniously dumped in the shelter parking lot. Fortunately an alert employee spotted the little guy, scooped him up and carried him into the safety and warmth of the shelter. This little boy is only 6 weeks old and loves to be held and cuddled. No. 21841 is an orange-striped tabby named 'Boo' and his brother, No. 21842, is an orange and white kitty named 'Chips.' These playful kitties are 10 weeks old and looking for homes with cat lovers. Almost every cage in the three cat rooms is full of equally fetching felines. The Pet Stop also has a selection of shelter cats and kittens available for adoption any day of the week.

Puppies, puppies, puppies! We've got oodles of cuddly, roly-poly, playful puppies! Visit the shelter and get first pick. We also have a wonderful selection of dogs of every size and color. Check us out on Dyerhumane.org or petfinder.com, type 38024 zip and see many of the animals we currently have for adoption. No 50531, 'Lady' is a beagle who is looking for a loving home. She is already housebroken and a sweet little girl. No. 50463, 'Lottie,' is a heartworm-negative, tri-colored basset/shepherd/dachshund mix, who is a little over a year old. This happy girl loves to frolic about and gives lots of doggie kisses.

Thanks to Almost Home Rescue located at The Pet Stop. They now have saved over 440 shelter dogs' lives since Sept. 12, 2008. Many of these pets would have been euthanized due to lack of people to adopt them. Besides promoting spay and neuter, we do everything in our power to find the shelter pets safe, loving homes, including using rescue groups and the Internet. These pets' lives depend upon adoption.

Would you like to make a difference in local homeless pets' lives? Volunteer at the shelter by handing out treats and toys, walk the dogs, socialize pets or any other way you would like to help, on your schedule. Call the shelter office or stop by for details. If you can't volunteer, we always appreciate donations. We need monetary donations, treats, toys, dog blankets, bath towels, cat/dog dry and canned food, low-dust regular litter, toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, etc.

A wonderful way to honor and remember your loved ones, beloved pets and help local homeless pets is to make a monetary donation. Specify how your donation should be directed. The Beagley Fund (heartworm treatment) is depleted and in need of replenishing. Heartworm-positive dogs face certain death without treatment. Other options are Save a Life Makeover (professional grooming), General Fund, Honorariums, and Memorials. Your donations help us keep our doors open. Please mail your donations to Dyersburg-Dyer County Humane Society, P.O. Box 223, Dyersburg, TN 38025-0223. Specify who the donation is to, with complete address and who the donation is from, with complete address and we'll do the rest.

The Dyersburg-Dyer County Humane Society is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday. We are located at 1120 E. Court and phone number is (731) 285-4889.
