A rat terrier withered away to skin and bones after a wound on his mouth became infected. The left side of the dog's mouth, jaw and tongue were gone by the time the dog was taken to the local animal shelter. The dog owner has been sentenced to two days in jail for animal cruelty.

George Robertson Jr., 50, 1813 Schaffer St., pleaded guilty to a charge of cruelty to animals Tuesday in Dyersburg Municipal Court. He was sentenced to 11 months, 29 days in jail with all but 48 hours suspended. He is to reimburse the Dyersburg/ Dyer County Humane Society for its costs of $233.57 and must also pay court costs. He will be on supervised probation for the remainder of his suspended sentence.

Humane Society President Carol Feather said this was the worst case of animal cruelty she's witnessed. She also believes this may be the first time anyone in Dyer County has received jail time for a cruelty case.

The investigation began Dec. 14 when Judy Robertson took an emaciated black and white rat terrier mix to the animal shelter while her husband was out of town. The dog belonged to her husband, George. She told Animal Control Officer Bobby Turnage that the dog was 16 years old, was sick and needed to be euthanized.

"Although Robertson advised Turnage that the animal had refused to eat, it devoured the food presented to it by the Humane Society as if it were starving," a Dyersburg Police Department report stated.

Judy Robertson told police the dog had cut his lip a month earlier while trying to eat out of a dog food can. The family couldn't afford to take the dog to a veterinarian. Robertson told police the family was attempting to treat the wound and believed it was actually healing.

Dr. Jon Martin of Animal Care Hospital examined the dog and determined that it probably hadn't been fed for two weeks to a month. Martin found no evidence of food in the dog's stomach or intestines.

The wounds on the dog's mouth were at least two weeks old, the veterinarian reported. The skin, muscle and bone on the left side of the dog's face were necrotic and the jawbone was exposed. One-third of the dog's tongue also had rotted away. The vet also reported a "horrible, fetid odor" to the dog's mouth. The dog was having trouble swallowing and was panting.

The terrier, which was estimated to be 3 years old, also had scabs on both front legs, fleas and other problems.

The dog's prognosis was listed as "poor to grave." Martin described this as a case of complete lack of care with obvious signs of abuse.

Robertson was cited to city court. The dog was euthanized.

The police report noted that the Robertsons had at least three more dogs, all of which appeared to be well fed and in good health.

Let him go without food or water for about 2 weeks...an eye for an eye...that is cruel to say, but dad gum...makes me so angry to mistreat a defenseless animal....what is wrong with people these days!!!

-- Posted by Beachvol on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 11:44 PM

He should have had to do more than 48 hours! There are some screwed up people in this world....poor dog. I could not imagine EVER seeing my dog even begin to look this way! Hope he dosent have any children!!!!!!! And who in their right mind lets their dog even try to eat out of a dog food can. He clearly has a mental problem...the jailers should give him his food in a can...hehehehh!

Two Days in jail? After what this poor dog went through? The wife should go to jail to for being a liar !!!!!!These people shouldn't be allowed to have animals.

-- Posted by NannaP on Sun, Feb 7, 2010, at 12:44 AM

Two days really? the picture alone tells enough of a story that this couple should not be allowed animals and should be in prison. People if you can't or wont take care of these animals and kids for that matter DON'T HAVE THEM. I am not advocating euthanizing animals or aborting babys. but Spay and nueter your pets and take other precautions for not creating more animals and babies that you are unwilling to care for as they deserve.

He probably would have gotten more jail time if Jim Horner hadn't refused to show the pictures of the dog to the judge.

I just cried. How can anyone let an animal suffer

like this??

-- Posted by yahooo on Sun, Feb 7, 2010, at 9:46 AM

I think everyone is being way too harsh to this animal loving person. He looks like a caring person in his mugshot. 2 days in jail is 2 days too long.

Even if u can't care 4 da pooch....drop him off at the shelter.....Thats part of the purpose of da humane society....(shelter)....Don't darn near kill da dog, then drop him off.....I don't compare humans 2 dogs but if thats your pet then take care of him....

-- Posted by DMASE on Sun, Feb 7, 2010, at 10:49 AM

Unless you are being sarcastic, I think Mr. Blister you are delusional. An animal lover would have never let their pet get to that point. If he really cared at all for that animal, he would have either sought treatment for it or surrendered it so it could receive the care it needed. I have to agree with Beachvol and eye for an eye. Two weeks without food or water and no medical attention would fit the crime. 48 hours is ridiculous. It just goes to show the effects of lawyers in our society. Lawyers are the reason the country is in the turmoil that it is in now.

His wife needs to be in jail with him, she was there and could have fed the dog. Such sick people in this world. They will be judged one day by a higher authority and the punishment will be a lot more than 48 hours.

Mr. Blister isn't trying to be saracastic, it is just a pathetic, pityful, childish attemp at drawing attention to himself and angering those of us that do care. Pay him no mind, he isn't worth your time.

If "I love animals" account of what went on in court is accurate, then our justice system is in worse shape than I had thought and in dire need of repair from the inside out.

An eye for an eye is extremely appropriate in this case. Cruelty is far too common in our society. He and his wife should have to do without until they look and feel like that poor animal did and then post their pictures. I'm sure that would be more of a deterent to possible offenders in the future than the 48 hours he recieved.

I trust the picture of the poor creature was posted in an attempt to draw attention to this ever increasing sickness, othewise I feel it was in poor taste. Curelty to any living creature is far too common in our society.

Shame on this man and his family, not to mention the neighbors for not calling this in to the shelter or police. Whatever happened to the neighbors not caring?? IF I see an animal being abused or neglected, I call. SHAME ON THE PEOPLE. FINES AND JAIL TIME IS NEEDED.

This lowlife SOB..I wish I could gave 3 minutes with him..He would look worse than this poor dog looks..

-- Posted by dcbivens on Sun, Feb 7, 2010, at 1:13 PM

why would should abuse their animals it is against the law

-- Posted by TNprincess22 on Sun, Feb 7, 2010, at 5:02 PM

Two days is rediculous for this. He should get sentanced to community service for a month working at the shelter.

-- Posted by c9bcc on Sun, Feb 7, 2010, at 5:04 PM

30 days at the humane society taking care of animals should be part of the sentance

-- Posted by c9bcc on Sun, Feb 7, 2010, at 5:05 PM

He doesn't need to be anywhere close to animals, Let him work community service picking up trash or digging graves,

How very sad! I 'googled' Mr. Robertson and found he's a registered sex offender-I'm not familiar with the event(s) that offered him that esteemed status. I'm not perporting a link between that and his promotion for the sanctity of life regarding his dog who, by the way, suffered unimagineable and excruciating pain beyond what he and his wife saw fit to allow. It speaks volumes for both of them, along with the defense attorney and judge.

-- Posted by Here's your sign... on Sun, Feb 7, 2010, at 10:18 PM

I believe his wife let it go on a little too long. Hopefully this particular day was her only chance to try and get this dog some type of help or relief....but then again...I doubt it! I wouldnt give a ratz a double s what my husband had to say or what type of fit he would throw!! Id kick his a double s my self if I ever saw him do something like this to an animal! I have seen this guy at my place of employment...I hope I dont see him any time soon..I might just get fired after I get a few things off my chest. He's just an ol' dirty butt!!!!!!!!

-- Posted by disowned&proud on Sun, Feb 7, 2010, at 11:53 PM

I don't understand why everyone (nearly) seems to want to justify what this idiot did, by saying that he was stu p i d, or dumb. That's B.S. If he had enough sense to be "out of town", then he had enough sense to be able to look at this animial and say "hey, ya recktum this feller needs sum grocries?", or at least something similar. Even though I am aware that it would be a waste of good lead, I'd be proud to buy the bullit, if someone would be willing to place it, properly!

Sick IS NOT THE WORD!!! He should have his fingernails pulled out with a pair of needle nose vice grips, and replace them (the fingernails) with bamboo shoots. Then, some form of fitting punishment should be applied.

-- Posted by Lil' Arkansas on Mon, Feb 8, 2010, at 9:38 AM

It is so sad to see an animal in such state. I don't think 2 days is enough time for this man to understand what he did was wrong.

Why wouldn't Horner show the pix? Why wasn't the humane society people at the trial to show what a sick person this man is?

At least his wife had enough sense to take the poor thing some place for a little bit of help. Other wise that poor thing would of suffered a lot longer.

The poor thing tried to feed itself is why it cut it's mouth on the can.

Spay and neuter.....

-- Posted by senior remark on Mon, Feb 8, 2010, at 3:44 PM

Two people from the humane society were there. The head of the shelter and the animal control officer who investigated it, took the poor dog to the vet trying to save it, and took pictures. They were VERY upset and frustrated that Horner refused to show the pictures to the judge but there was nothing they could do about it. They couldn't force him to show the pictures. If he had, you can bet the judge probably would have given the guy at least 6 months! When Robertson walked out of the courtroom, Robertson angrily said, "I've done nothing wrong." I know because I was there and heard it.

I know all about these two low life people. First of all, he definately should have received more than 48 hours in jail. This is not the first time he has been in trouble with the law. He is a repeat sex offender against young girls from 12-14 year old, and this is NOT statutory rape when he was in his thirties at that time. The 16 year old was the only one he was PROSECUTED on. He is the lowest form of a human being that there ever was. Makes you wonder, if this is how he treated an animal, how does he treat his disabled child? There's something very wrong with our judicial system when this type of person continues to break the law in many ways. Instead of getting sent to jail for the statutory rape charge, he was rewarded disability on his so called "mind",and now we taxpayers are feeding his fat butt. Someone should ask him if he likes swimming in the MS River? I could write a book!!!

-- Posted by therealtruthman on Mon, Feb 8, 2010, at 7:03 PM

There should definitely be tougher penalties against people who abuse animals (or defenseless children)! Why we as a modern society (?) continue to just slap the wrist of someone who will abuse and neglect animals is beyond me. We as humans have a great responsibility being at the top (although sometimes I wonder) intellectually of the animal kingdom. How does it speak about us in general when we allow these types of attrocities to happen? I say lock him up for a good long time (at least a year) and SEND A MESSAGE to those pathetic excuses that call themselves part of the human race that says: "We will NOT put up with abuse or neglect in any shape or form."

-- Posted by MadisonB on Mon, Feb 8, 2010, at 8:04 PM

He dose treat all people with his demented ways ,except his family! His family is scared of him! He dose all kinds of odd jobs for cash ,sistersand thierlive in boy friends poping out babies all on mental checks and of course wellfare food stamps TN Care .Beleive me his is not mentle just plain bedrock crule. This town is full of people like this ,any one who lives close to rental house's sees things this kind are capable of and of course the law lets them go on to do even worse, put him away for good at least tax payers money will beused to keep him off our streets!

-- Posted by chief_ty20 on Tue, Feb 9, 2010, at 7:31 AM

He AND his wife should be arrested and charged.. two days is a JOKE.

And nothing says the judge can't be shown the pictures NOW. IF everyone sends him just the one in THIS article it should be enough to at least make him ASK for pics the next time
