City School Board OKs 2010-11 schedule, raises credits needed for DHS diploma

Saturday, March 6, 2010
Representatives of the Dyersburg City School Board passed the system's 2010-2011 schedule, set Dyersburg High School graduation requirements for the next three years and celebrated student accomplishments at its regular March meeting.

At a meeting on Monday, March 1, School Board members approved the system's 2010-2011 schedule.

Students will begin the school year on Thursday, July 29, with the last day of school set for Friday, June 3, 2011. Dyersburg High School will hold commencement services on Sunday, May 29, 2011.

Fall intersession is scheduled for Oct. 4-6, with Fall Break immediately following Oct. 11-15. Schools will release for Winter Break on Dec. 20 and return on Jan. 3, 2011. Spring intersession is set for March 14-18, with Spring Break immediately following March 21-25.

Schools within the Dyersburg City system will also observe Labor Day on Sept. 6, Fair day on Sept. 10, Thanksgiving on Nov. 24-26, Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 17, Presidents Day on Feb. 21, Good Friday on April 22 and Memorial Day on May 30.

Three snow days are included in the schedule. Excessive days missed will be made up the week of March 14-18.

Also at the meeting, members of the School Board approved gradually raising the credits needed to earn a DHS diploma over the next three years due to the larger amount of courses offered to students in the school's new trimester schedule.

With the six-period day, DHS students have traditionally had 24 opportunities to earn 22 credits over a four-year period. The new schedule allows students the chance to earn 7 1/2 credits per year instead of six, so board members will raise the requirements for graduation proportionally to the amount of courses offered.

Members of the DHS Class of 2010 and 2011 must complete 22 credits, with that number rising to 24 credits for the Class of 2012 and 25 for the Class of 2013.

Student successes were also celebrated by board members, with letters sent out to Dyersburg Middle School students named Trojans of the Month. Honored students include sixth-graders Jacob McLaughlin, Sammi Thai, Rachel Clifft, Erin Rausch, Amber Hearod, Amanda Dunn, Adia Moody, Armando Palacios, Leigh Lewis, Luis Rodriquez, Keashun Moses and Hugh Coleman; seventh-graders Macye Walker, Karan Thompson, Terry Pope, Mary Beth Stevens, Brittani Noen, Elaina Ashley, Londyn Vaughn, Catherine Moore, Anna Clark, Amanda Sanchez, Jaquisha Bursey and Joseph Lee; and eighth-graders Krysta Milburn, Kendra Hill, Lindsey Dunn, Laronda Bennett, Bethanie Price, Kason Thompson, Alli Hayes, Dillion Heldgepath, James Putman, Taylor Flatman, Chloe West and Louis Anderson.

Upcoming meetings scheduled will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 5 and Monday, June 7. The system's annual Retirement Banquet will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 3.
