Melvin David Beatty, 83, of Newbern, died Friday, April 9, 2010 at his residence.

He was a retired foreman for Memphis Light, Gas & Water, a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II, and a Mason and member of the Hess Lodge in Dyersburg.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Johnson-Williams Funeral Home with Bro. Don Green officiating. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery in Elbridge.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Lavata Willis Beatty of Newbern; a daughter, Linda Beatty of Newbern; two sons, Dennis Beatty of Memphis and Gerald Beatty of Bartlett; a sister, Rebecca Summers Hall of Dyersburg; a brother, James Beatty of Memphis; three grandchildren, Mark Beatty of Memphis, and Taylor Beatty and Rachel Beatty, both of Bartlett; and four great-grandchildren, Jonathan Beatty, Jordan Beatty, Jalen Beatty and Joshua Beatty, all of Memphis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim Henry and Cora McDonald Beatty; and two brothers, Dewey Edwards and Jack Edwards.

Pallbearers will be Keith McDonald, Lynn McDonald, Larry McDonald, Jeff Edwards, Bill Edwards and Arthur Vick.

Caron Albert Rice, 74, of Michigan, died Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Veterans Hospital in Ann Harbor, Mich.

He was an employee of Michigan State and was an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Rice; a sister, Neta White and husband, Edgar; two daughters, Pam and husband, Matt, and Kim and husband, Frank; a son, Earl; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three nephews, Bill, Danny and David Reese; a niece, Dolly Adams.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Virgie Rice; and a niece, Neta Faye Reece.
