Jessie Oakes, 88, of Newbern, died Friday, April 23, 2010.
She was a retired social worker for the state of Tennessee and beloved substitute teacher for the Dyer County School System, a member of Newbern First Baptist Church, member of Retired Social Work Organization, member of Cancer Support and Mental Health Support Groups, and a graduate from Auburn University.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Johnson-Williams Funeral Home with Bro. Danny Klutts officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Newbern.
The family will receive visitors from 3-6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Survivors include a daughter, Katha Dionne of Saint Louis, Mo. and husband Maurice Dionne; a son, Steve Oakes of Newbern; two grandchildren, Mark Oakes of Dyersburg and Jennifer Traube of Columbia, Ill.; and two great-grandchildren, Meredith Traube and Emily Traube, both of Columbia, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Edward Oakes Jr.; her parents, Issac Newton and Catherine Jent Short; two sisters, Imogene Coombes and Janie Short; and a brother, Fletcher Short.
Pallbearers will be deacons of Newbern First Baptist Church.

Deborah Agee Tatum, 57, of Dyersburg, died Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center.
She was retired as a licensed practical nurse for Methodist Hospital of Dyersburg and a member of Oak Grove Church of Christ.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Dyersburg Funeral Home with Bro. Tom Butler and Bro. Stephen Stoner officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Survivors include her husband, Toby Tatum of Dyersburg; her mother, Martha Agee of Dyersburg; and two brothers, Dr. Phillip Agee of Humboldt and Charles "Bubba" Agee of Dyersburg.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jim Tatum, and her father, Charles M. Agee Sr.
Pallbearers will be Drew Agee, Clayton Arrington, Charles Agee III, Jason Kidd, Jeremy Kidd and Kris Allen. Honorary pallbearer will be Wyn Agee.
