John A. Hollis, 99, of Dyersburg, died Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Dyersburg Manor Nursing Center.

He was a retired school custodian for High Ridge, Mo. School System and a member of Independent Free Holiness Church of God.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with Bro. Calvin Smith officiating. Burial will be in New Haven Cemetery in Ridgely.

The family will receive visitors from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeanette Hendricks and husband, Bill, of Jackson; a son, Howard Hollis and wife, Shirley, of Newbern; two sisters, Susie Harris of Dyersburg and Bertha Roper of Newbern; a brother, Elmer Hollis of RoEllen; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel Jonas Hollis; and his parents, George and Leola Neal Hollis.


Mary Tidwell was born February 4, 1928 in Randolph, Mississippi, the daughter of James Thelma and Loy Elizabeth Lindsey. She died on May 19, 2010, surrounded by family and friends at her home in Dyersburg. She was 82.

She was a former resident of Deering, MO. Ms. Tidwell graduated from Deering High School in Deering, MO and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. She taught school in Pontotoc and Tunica, MS and in Caruthersville, MO area schools. She touched the lives of countless children as a teacher in elementary schools in Mississippi and Missouri for more than 43 years. She was formerly of Robinsonville, MS and was born and raised in Randolph, MS and the surrounding area. She was a member of Three Oaks Chapel Baptist Church in Dyersburg.

Ms. Tidwell was married to her husband, L.L. "Buddy" Tidwell for 47 years. He preceded her in death in 1994.

She is survived by a daughter, Kay Tidwell, a grandson, Paul Phillips and wife, Samantha, and a great-granddaughter, Peyton Phillips, all of Dyersburg. She is also survived by a sister, Betty Ward of Blytheville, Arkansas and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Three Oaks Chapel Baptist Church with Bro. Bill Phipps officiating. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 p.m. until service time at the church. Burial with a graveside service will be Saturday, May 22 at 1:00 PM at the Salmon Cemetery in Randolph, Mississippi.

Honorary pallbearers will be Keith Ward, Mark Ward, Michael Tidwell, Billy Taylor, Danny Petrie, Ted McNeill, and Wayde Jackson.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Three Oaks Chapel Baptist Church, 1105 Resthome Rd., Dyersburg, TN 38024 or a charity of the donor's choice.
