County firefighters rescue couple from house fire

Wednesday, June 2, 2010
Dyer County firefighters rescued two people from a house fire on Monday evening after the occupants called 911.

The Newbern and East Dyer County fire departments responded to a house fire at 645 Snow Farm Road, in Tatumville, at approximately 11 p.m. on Monday. When fire crews arrived they discovered a man and woman still inside the house while a bedroom was on fire. The man was having trouble with his mobility and the woman was trying to assist him out of the house.

The firefighters were able to get them out of the house and extinguish the fire in the bedroom. The man and woman both suffered from extensive smoke inhalation and were taken by ambulance to Dyersburg Regional Medical Center since the Dyersburg medical helicopter was occupied at the time. However, the woman was later flown to Memphis for treatment.

Dyer County Fire Chief James Medling said the fire is under investigation, but does not suspect any foul play. He said the fire departments were able to effectively contain the fire and prevent further damage to the house and save the two residents.

I feel these fire fighters should have special recognition at a ceremony of the county commission. Numerous volunteer fire fighters risk their lives each day throughout Dyer County and are not properly recognized.

Great job!!! God Bless our home town heroes!
