Matthew 25:40 recently celebrated 20 years of serving the people of Dyer County by having a picnic at Okeena Park.
The program, which is overseen by a board of directors and run by Matthew 25:40 Executive Director Amy Schmitt, began when members of St. Mary's Episcopal Church got together and started the outreach program.
Matthew 25:40 provides short-term assistance for families facing emergencies. The program is able to provide rent, utilities, food, medicine and clothing to those who are experiencing temporary problems that life has thrown them.
Dyer County Mayor Richard Hill commended Schmitt on her work with the residents of Dyer County.
"We appreciate what you do each and every day, helping those in need," said Hill.
Dyersburg Mayor John Holden said Schmitt has a heart for service, which was evident in her work with victims of the recent flooding.
Both mayors presented Matthew 25:40 President Jim Mohead and Schmitt with a proclamation. It noted that Matthew 25:40 is committed to promoting self sufficiency among the people it serves and is dedicated to fostering a sense of community responsibility among its clients. It also said Mathew 25:40 recognizes the rights of all individuals in need and treats them with dignity and respect.
Rev. Gary Meade of St. Mary's Episcopal Church said he was proud of the work that Mathew 25:40 does in providing much needed services to area residents.
"Amy is a wonderful, caring person and wonderful resource," said Meade.
Schmitt said she is looking forward to staying with Mathew 25:40 for many years to come and said she couldn't do it without the help of the community.
"This is an awesome community and I wouldn't live anywhere else," said Schmitt. "I feel like I'm doing what I was guided to do. Thank you to everyone, for all that you do to support us."
