Scholarship fund established for fallen soldier's son

Thursday, June 17, 2010
The former fraternity of Israel P. O'Bryan, the Newbern soldier killed Friday in Iraq, is establishing a scholarship fund for his son.

O'Bryan was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon while he was at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He and his wife, Brenna, have a 1-year-old son, Turner.

O'Bryan, 24, was fatally wounded in a car bomb blast in Jalula, Iraq, on Friday morning. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army's 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. The division is supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He was a 2004 graduate of Dyer County High School and the son of Eddie and Denise Jones of Newbern and Richard and Linda O'Bryan of Portland, Tenn.

SigEpVets, a network of fraternity brothers who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, announced the scholarship fund Wednesday.

The Fallen Brothers Scholarship Fund has been set up by the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization. All donations made to this fund in honor of O'Bryan will be held in trust for his young son's college education. Donations can be made by mail or online.

Make checks payable to "The Fallen Brothers Scholarship in Memory of Israel O'Bryan" and mail it to: Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 1901, Richmond, VA 23218-1901.

Online, visit www.SigEpFoundation.org and select "Give Online Now >Endowments." In the Donor Comments box enter: The Fallen Brothers Scholarship in Memory of Israel O'Bryan.

I really appreciate what Izzy's fraternity is doing for his son. It is sad that this has to be done because of his father's death, but we appreciate the honor given to him and his son and Izzy would appreciate this also.

Thanks again.

His Aunt.
