Dyersburg police arrested three juveniles on Sunday after they vandalized several gaslights along Troy Avenue, but they were released to their parents after the McDowell Center turned them away.

The suspects, described as one 17-year-old and two 15-year-old black males, were seen knocking the poles over just after midnight on Sunday, July 25.

A witness phoned police after the suspects vandalized the gaslights and kept them in sight until police arrived. The witness then directed police to the suspects where they were arrested.

The lights, which are run by natural gas part of the year, had gas lines that were ruptured and utility crews shut the street down until the gas could be turned off. DPD Capt. Roger Dudley said the gas leak could have caused a dangerous situation.

Police took the three juveniles to the McDowell Center on Highway 51 Bypass to be processed and housed. However, Dudley said McDowell Center workers told police they did not have any room at the facility for the youths. Police then had to contact the suspects' parents and release them to their custody.

The estimated damage to the gaslights is approximately $2,000. The suspects were charged with vandalism over $1,000 and violation of curfew. They are scheduled to be in Juvenile Court on Aug. 18.

Curfew? What curfew?

Is this any surprise? They saw the "harsh punishment" that the kids that vandalized the community center received. Once again, the taxpayers will have to flip the bill for these repairs.

Until justice begins to be served in Dyersburg, this kind of thing will continue to happen.

The justice system is not free. Until and unless people are willing to spend money for needed changes, such as expanding the McDowell Center, changes can not be made. What are you willing to do to effect these changes? Since the sales tax is one of the highest in the country, there must be another source of revenue. Perhaps an increase in property taxes or an income tax might provide the money for a more effective criminal justice system. There needs to be more done than just complaining in the newspaper. What are you willing to pay for the improvements?

Nazi Pelosi you can be so backwoodsy it is pathetic. But for the juvenile court system, community service and probation does not surfice the damage to those nice lamps. Those kids need to clean up Troy Ave everyday and wear a sign that states what they did.

mcdowell center is a joke, so why spend more money(that we do not have)and make these kids work it off everyday after school until it is payed and make the parents accountable for where their child is after hours. Until this happens this WILL continue. Starts at a young age(nothing done) and continues as an adult(and nothing none until they kill someone) Or it happpens to someone in the justice system personel, then you will see changes.
