Police arrest driver after finding suspected marijuana in lap

Friday, December 3, 2010

The Dyersburg Police Department's Street Crimes Unit arrested a man on Monday on several drug charges after first discovering alleged marijuana in the driver's lap during a traffic stop.

Tomar Smith, 21, 1006 Vernon St., is charged with possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance and driving while license is canceled/suspended/revoked.

The unit observed Smith and a passenger in a white Chevy Caprice in violation of the seatbelt law. After officers pulled the vehicle over they noticed what appeared to be loose marijuana lying in Smith's lap. He was then patted down and police discovered a bag of suspected crack cocaine and another bag of suspected cocaine.

A check of his license also determined he was driving with a suspended license.

Smith's case was bound over to Dyer County Circuit Court where he is scheduled to appear on Dec. 20. He is being held on an $8,000 bond. The passenger was not charged in the incident.
