Leroy "Buddy" Byars Jr., 70, of Dyersburg, Tennessee passed away on March 4th, 2011. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. & Mrs. Leroy Byars Sr., brothers, Homer and Edward Byars; sisters, Faye Qualls and Betty Byars.

He is the father of Marty Byars, the Owner of Byars Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia. He is survived by his son, Marty L. Byars and (Cindy) of Cumming, Georgia; daughter, Susan and (Tim) Dukes of Chicago, Illinois; brother, James Byars of Valparaiso, Indiana; sister Sue Walker of Dyersburg, Tennessee; grandchildren, Macy Dukes, Taylor Byars, Shelton Byars and Paxton Byars.

He retired from United States Steel after 25 years of service.

The family will receive friends at the Johnson-Williams Funeral Home in Newbern, Tennessee on Monday, March 7th, 2011 from the hours of 5-8 PM. Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Meacham Cemetery, Dyersburg, Tennessee.

Byars Funeral Home and Johnson-Williams Funeral Home in Newbern, Tennessee will be in charge of the arrangements.


Bettie H. Clark, 83, of Dyersburg, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis.

She was a retired operator for South Central Bell and a member of Tigrett Church of Christ.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Friendship Funeral Home with Charles Ragsdale officiating. Burial will be in Miller's Chapel Cemetery in Bonicord.

The family will receive visitors from 2 p.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary C. Thurmond (Ron) of Brighton; and three grandchildren, Layne C. Thurmond, Baylee Thurmond and Grace Thurmond.

She was the daughter of the late Lula Pierce and C.M. Harper and the last surviving child of 17 children.


Frances Harris, 80, of Halls, died Friday, March 4, 2011 in Ridgely.

Born in Halls, she was the daughter of the late George Homer and the late Mary Kate (Neely) Watson.

She was a receptionist employed by Forked Deer Electric Cooperative. Mrs. Harris was a member of Williams Chapel Baptist Church and the Halls High School Class of 1949.

She is survived by two sons: Thomas (Candice) Moore of Roanoake, Ind., and Robert (Patricia) Moore of Halls. She is also survived by three stepbrothers, Roger Harris, Mike Harris and Randy Harris, five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and a niece.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Alexander Harris Jr., her parents, a son, Allen Moore, and a sister, Rachel Delarue.

Pallbearers will be Jason Johnson, Jason Leonard, Mike Boals, Leo Arnold, John Bill Childress and James Finley Knox. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends may call Sunday from 5-8 p.m. at Halls Funeral Home, 109 N. Church St., Halls.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Halls Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Clay officiating.

Interment will be Monday in Greenhill Memorial Gardens, Halls.


Joe Barker Clifton II, 57, of Pauls Valley, Okla., formerly of Ridgely, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

Clarence Henry Shell, age 70, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at his residence.

Sonja Sue Shell, age 68, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at her residence.
