The incident was reported to police on Tuesday after employees of the Los Portales Mexican restaurant on Lake Road noticed the donation jar was missing they had set up to go to cancer treatment and research. A review of their video surveillance footage shows a female suspect stealing the jar on Monday, Jan. 9, around 9:40 p.m.
According to DPD Sgt. Jim Joyner, the jar contained between $75 and $90. He says the female came in wearing a gray warm-up suit with a jacket with a unique emblem on the back. She ordered a bag of chips and paid for it with cash. As the cashier went to retrieve her order from the back she stuffed the jar into her pants. The cashier came back and gave her the chips and she walked out the door. Ironically, the suspect came back inside to ask about salsa and the cashier told her it would cost extra. When she came in the second time she was not wearing the hood that had covered part of her face when she was inside the first time and the video was able to capture her likeness.
The suspect is identified as a black female in her early 20s, between 5'6" and 5'7", medium to heavy build, wearing a gray warm-up suit with unique design on the back.
Joyner said they would like to find out the identity of the suspect and is asking for the public's help. If you have any information on this case contact Crime Stoppers of Dyer County at 731-285-TIPS or Dyersburg Police Criminal Investigation Division at 731-288-7679.
