Swift

The body of Karen Swift has been released from the Shelby County Medical Examiner's Office and Dyer County Sheriff's investigators are awaiting the coroner's final report.

Swift's body was released to her family and was taken to McNabb Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Ark., where Swift is originally from. The visitation will be Friday, Feb. 10, from 5 - 8 at the funeral home and the funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. at the Church of God in Pocahontas.

Dyer County Chief Investigator Terry McCreight said Swift's husband, David Swift, is listed as Swift's next of kin and the body would have been released to him.

Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box stated now that Swift's body has been released they feel the coroner's final report on how Swift was murdered should be completed soon.

"After we receive the report, we can proceed further with our investigation," said Box.

Swift, a 44-year-old mother of four was last seen early Sunday morning, Oct. 30, by her husband at their home on Willie Johnson Road after she reportedly returned from a Halloween party. Her white 2004 Nissan Murano was later found abandoned on Sunday, Oct. 30, on Millsfield Highway near the intersection of Harness Road with a flat tire. Her body was found near Bledsoe Cemetery in Dyer County on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011.

The Dyer County Sheriff's Department is still asking anyone who had contact with Swift before her disappearance, recalls seeing anyone near her vehicle on Millsfield Highway on Oct. 30, or has any other information about the case to contact the Dyer County Sheriff's Office at 731-285-2802 or 1-800-TBI-FIND.

  • Looks like this Sheriff dept doesn't have anything for an arrest. "Waiting for the coroner's report"? Might as well say "we don't have a clue what happened". Cold case. Shame for this family.

  • Well you know what they say about opinions... Lol, having said that, here's mine. I think no matter what people say, the sheriff's department worked diligently on this case. It is election year isn't it? It would be stupid for them not to have made every effort. But the truth is, without evidence they can't make an arrest. Everyone can "KNOW" who did it, and I think most people, self included, have a pretty good idea. And as sad as it may be, with out more evidence, there is not enough to convict or they would have been happy to arrest someone. Maybe they will get what they need from that report. I pray for family and friends' sake's that they do.

  • @raspberrie You just contradicted your own pathetic statement about opinions. It is becoming less and less likely that you Nancy Grace worshipers are right about the husband, but keep believing what you wish. Glad that you are likely to ignorant to be allowed on a jury.

The husband has become less of a suspect since teh gossip crowd discharged him, but eep believing what you will. All you idiots do is ruin people's lives with your opinions.

  • there is no question that this whole incident is worthy of being one of the greatest tragedies in the annals of dyer county history. hopefully, the sheriff, the district attorney, the tbi and any other agency that has worked this case has put their best foot forward. if news emerges that they did anything less than their BEST they deserve to be jobless come election day.

if i'm not mistaken, the capital letters in the last sentence above is the first time i've ever used any capital letter in any of my responses to any news story ever written in the state gazette.

  • My deepest condolences to the entire family of Mrs Swift... I know in my heart that she will be deeply missed by every member of her family and by many in her immediate community.

I do hope that people will stop pointing fingers at her husband, because thus far no one has any proof what-so-ever, and those who are whispering and pointing at her husband aren't even stopping to think about how such things must add to the heavy hearts of her already hurting children.

    Please don't judge hastily!

  • @ cctvsupplier:

Hahahaha, your funny. I condraticted myself on purpose and acknowledged that fact in my post. You might want to read more carefully before responding next time. Lol, and no where in my post did I mention anything about Karen's husband, nor will I ever - both he and those kids have been through enough and it is not my place to drag someone's name through the mudd for no reason, why would I. And who in the HE77 is Nancy Grace???? It sounds like you are one of those hate mongers who is not happy unless they are poking at someone. So poke away, I really could care less. I would hate to be you, life's too short to be hateful. As I said earlier, I pray that they get enough evidence to make an arrest, for the FAMILY'S sake, and yes that includes David. So stuff that in your crow pie and eat it!

  • I read about two previous murders in the State Gazette in which Terry McCreight and Calvin Johnsom investigated and I ask myself why would anyone think they could solve the Swift case as the other two are still cold cases. It looks like Jeff Box needs Terry McCreight for more than 2500 votes. It looks as if they are not capable of performing the job. From reading the State Gazette it would appear that Jeff Box is more concerned with a petty drug case and getting his name in the paper. It looks as if Terry McCreight and 2500 votes and petty drug cases will have to get Box re-elected next term, because that is all he's got as a resume. The citizens of Dyer Co. may want to consider a recall vote concerning the sheriff as it appears he is incompetent to run the office.

  • All you people watch too much tv. Every crime is not solved in the first 48 and every crime doesn't have DNA. The sheriff's dept. didn't even know for sure there was a crime until the body was found, so the investigation really started then. Yes a lot of preliminary work was done and a lot of manhours spent by both the public and law enforcement, but no body, no crime. One thing from tv is true, if every t is not crossed and every i not dotted, criminals get off. These cases take time and for all we know an arrest may be immininent and the officers waiting for the final report to have a solid case.

It seems everyone is mad because they don't know everything the investigators do.

  • I think Nancy Grace and the lady profiler on her show were right on as to what happened. I believe the profiler was right when she said that serial killers dont just throw her clothes over in the weeds next to her car and take the body. He may not have to pay for what he done on this earth, because there isnt enough evidence to convict him, but he'll have to pay when he stands before the Good Lord.

  • Maybe some cable TV channel like ID will decide to look into this. Otherwise it looks like it's gonna be a cold case...

  • Clocks....we as a society are forever imprisoned by time, at least until we breathe our last. In this present era of "want it now", many have forgotten that this is "life", not a crime drama on television. Keep your opinions where they belong and pray for the family, friends, and law enforcement. Time will heal and time will reveal. Be patient.

  • Karen would of not walked out on her sick child that night at 2:00 in the morning. And i doubt very seriously that a stranger is gonna come in and drag her out of her bed at that time of the morning. The text messages she sent between 11:40 and 11:50 that night already was saying that things werent going good that night. And shes in bed with her sick child at 2 in the morning. And she comes up missing that night and her husband doesnt call until 3:00 the next day when her car is sitting within 300 yards of there house with 2 slit tires. It was Karens friend that called dispatch first at 2:47 and they told her to tell the husband to call. And her body is found just down the road from her home. How could anybody not suspect the husband. Very very suspicious.

  • I think this case is a long way from being a "cold" case, and people should be more supportive of and have more confidence in the local LE. So far there has not been a good reason to withdraw support. I feel like the length of time Karen Swift's was at the ME may be an indication there was actually something to test. So many times there isn't anything to test. Might not have been the news her family wanted to hear but thank God they at least they know where she is, so many other cases the body of the missing is not found or recovered at all.

  • What this case needs is the law enforcement community from Sidney, Montana. Anybody remember Sherry Arnold? She went missing from a run, in January, her body hasn't been found, but they have TWO men IN CUSTODY. For the person who posted that there "was no crime" until Karen's body was found, I call BS. Everyone knew full well that something terrible happened, otherwise she'd be at home, safe and sound, not missing. Good grief. In 99% of all missing woman cases, the women are missing because they met their demise, not because they simply ran away.

In Karen's case, thanks to two average citizens who stumbled upon her body, this was proven to be the case. I don't buy for one second that Dyersburg Law Enforcement has any big secret up their sleeve. They bungled the investigation, plain and simple.

  • Also, it's interesting that some people have some type of hatred towards Nancy Grace. You do know that Nancy Grace was top of her class in law school, a former prosecutor, and a victim's advocate. She happens to hate crimes and the people who commit them...why in the world would you have a problem with that, cctvsupplier?

-- Posted by Darby on Sat, Feb 11, 2012, at 10:06 PM
  • Shelby county medical examiner kept Karens body for a good while. I think that they may have some really good evidence judging that its taken a while. I somehow feel like if theyre gonna make an arrest that it might be this week. Lets hope it is soon. The murderer needs be be put behind bars. I agree with Nancy Grace and the woman profiler on her show. All the evidence was so close to her home. That says alot!!
