TBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Maury City

Monday, June 25, 2012

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into a shooting in which an officer shot and killed a suspect involved in pursuit across state lines.

TBI spokesperson Kristin Helm stated the TBI was requested to investigate the officer involved shooting that occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, near 5606 Highway 88 in Maury City, Tenn.

Reportedly, the preliminary investigation revealed that Tommy McCoy Jr., 22, had been the subject of a law enforcement pursuit that originated in Missouri by the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department. McCoy reportedly almost hit an officer there who was directing traffic at the scene of a fire earlier that evening.

Afterwards, the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department pursued McCoy into Tennessee and the Crockett County Sheriff's office also got involved in the pursuit. The pursuit ended on Highway 88, where McCoy fled on foot and was shot by a Crockett County officer.

TBI agents are still trying to determine the number of officers at the scene.

Helm said the details of the incident leading up to the shooting are currently under investigation by TBI and the case file will be turned over to the 28th Judicial District Attorney General's Office upon completion.

"The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy on McCoy and evidence gathered at the scene will be submitted to the TBI's Crime Lab for processing," said Helm. "It will most likely take several months before the investigation is completed and reviewed by the DA."

She added it was up to the Crockett County Sheriff's Office to release the officer's identity that was involved in the shooting as well as his employment status. Helm did not elaborate on whether McCoy was armed or not.

  • This should be a lesson to all not to run from a law enforcement officer when he wants to question you. It would appear that people who run have something to hide. The law enforcement officer is the ultimate authority when he engages you. It is foolish not to cooperate with him. He has a gun, a jail, and the court on his side. Don't be foolish.

  • Why is it always a huge investigation by TBI or the FBI when someone is shot by officers? Where was the big investigation when an officer was gunned down in Crockett County recently? Why is there always more concern for a prisoner than for an officer? Our country is backwards.

  • sophronia, the criminals will continue to receive more rights than the law abiding citizens. It will never change as long as the laws place the criminals as victims.

But no one deserves what had happened to him. Even if he was in the wrong the cop that shot him, that I know who did it , needs to be put in prison for murder because what happened to the tasers the county had.? I know TJ and he is a great guy and friend . Means alot to the community Why didn't they use the tasers instead of murdering him. I hope the cop gets what he deserves not to be on either side but he should not done it. But that's what was going to happen when the cop just got out of rehab and didn't need the gun back and bamb this happens. TJS LIFE COULD HAVE BEEN NOT TAKEN BUT WITH SOME FOOLISH COPS DECISION IT WAS AND I HOPE HE GETS MORE THAN WHAT HE DESERVES OUT OF THIS. BUT ITS CROCKETT COUNTY ITS CROOKED ANYWAYS

  • I have a question, If he was so great and was working on getting his life together, Why did he run "two states and 60 miles of interstate" Not to mention the passenger whos life he put in danger? Then when he did stop, he got out and ran.. I dont know why the cop decided to shoot, I was not there. But if he was so innocent and stopped in Missouri when the cops got behind him, this tragety would have not happened.. Sounds like this young man decided his future by breaking the law.. All he had to do was stop for the cops in Missouri.. Why didnt he?

  • I don't care who u are it didn't give that dam cop any right to shoot no matter who they was chasing. The teasers was what they should have done. They didn't like him, that goes to show you that money and who you know over powers what the cops do. They will even murder someone in cold blood in front of family and be mean to them. Welcome to 2012 because times will be changing and HE WILL GET JUSTICE. AND FOR THE

  • Do you think the lord or who ever y'all believe in will let you carry your stuff and money you have on earth.

    Think about it

What if he was your son or friend. Think about if it was your son or friend that did this. Would you help him out or what not?

  • razr, let me say this. If he had killed one of YOUR family, would you want him stopped any way they could? I`m sure the policeman had cause to do it. If the suspect got out and ran, the officedr didn`t know but what TJ didn`t have a gun or not. If you weren`t there, why are you raising so much hel*. I would want the truth to be known. Then console the family, whom I offer my condolences to, before you get in trouble by running off at the mouth. I don`t know what happened but two states and a bunch of counties after almost hitting an officer with a vehicle and still not stop? Put yourself in the officers place. I know you hate to lose a friend but think about it.

  • there are many, many other ways to catch a suspect rather than using lethal force. in this case killing a man for running. that's why we have k-9 officers and dogs, etc, etc. and grandaddy, there is nothing in the story that says this man killed anyone.

  • Well Grandad

First off I respect your opinion but you apparently don't live in this town. The cops in this town is so stuck up that don't want to get the bad people and kill them, that are killing their own children or just killing people in general. This town needs to be cleaned up badly.

And I said and I quote " I am not taken up for TJ or the police but what TJ did was wrong and I agree" But to shoot someone in cold blood is wrong and I hope you don't think that it is right.. Because if everyone is like you then there will be millions of people shooting in cold blood.... Not to get off course of what I was trying to say. There was options that those cops could have done, like shoot out the tires anything. I'm not taken up for anyone but it's wrong and sinful to kill someone in cold blood and hide it like nothing happened.

  • To: Closerlook

Thank you for agreeing and it doesn't have anything in this article that states, "This man kill anyone"

  • Every should to tell there story in court. Our legal system is based on it. What did the Deputy and Maury City Police Chief whom was present, need this unarmed white boy silenced for?

Police Chief Stitts failed in his duty to protect and serve the towns citizens, be refusing to cry for hold of fire, in his lust for dominating the town white folks.

Deputy Jerri Curl Phillip lives in sin with an inmates wife almost 30 years his juniors. Did the shooting victim know soemthing about Phil's criminal white girlfriend? Elizabeth Estes is a career criminal with outstanding warrants in the neighboring state of GA. Yo u might remember here from the new a few years ago she drove thirty mile to set her boyfriend on fie in Jackson. Did Phil meet her while a Crockett County prisoner That would make living with here possibly criminal, its definitely consorting with violent felons for sexual favor.

Unarmed shot in the back, fleeing from hate and madness.
