TBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Maury City
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into a shooting in which an officer shot and killed a suspect involved in pursuit across state lines.
TBI spokesperson Kristin Helm stated the TBI was requested to investigate the officer involved shooting that occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, near 5606 Highway 88 in Maury City, Tenn.
Reportedly, the preliminary investigation revealed that Tommy McCoy Jr., 22, had been the subject of a law enforcement pursuit that originated in Missouri by the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department. McCoy reportedly almost hit an officer there who was directing traffic at the scene of a fire earlier that evening.
Afterwards, the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department pursued McCoy into Tennessee and the Crockett County Sheriff's office also got involved in the pursuit. The pursuit ended on Highway 88, where McCoy fled on foot and was shot by a Crockett County officer.
TBI agents are still trying to determine the number of officers at the scene.
Helm said the details of the incident leading up to the shooting are currently under investigation by TBI and the case file will be turned over to the 28th Judicial District Attorney General's Office upon completion.
"The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy on McCoy and evidence gathered at the scene will be submitted to the TBI's Crime Lab for processing," said Helm. "It will most likely take several months before the investigation is completed and reviewed by the DA."
She added it was up to the Crockett County Sheriff's Office to release the officer's identity that was involved in the shooting as well as his employment status. Helm did not elaborate on whether McCoy was armed or not.
