Though the Dyer County golf team didn't finish in the top three at the District 13AAA tournament held at Pickwick Landing, several members of the squad qualified to extend their season at the region tournament set for Sept. 17, also being played at Pickwick Landing.
DC sophomore Daniel Booker Jr. carded an even-par round of 72 to finish fourth overall. Booker overcame a struggling start that resulted in three straight bogeys before turning things around to finish 1-under on the front. The solid play continued on the back nine as Booker shot 1-over to finish at even par.
Booker's performance drew praise from DC golf coach Eddie Sims afterward. "Daniel has got some serious game and the way he bounced back from a bad start proves the point," said Sims. "He's got a great shot at making it to the state tournament for the second straight year."
Joining Booker at the region tournament will be junior teammate Tucker Haycraft (88), freshman Javen Thomas (90), sophomore Dylan Parker (94) and freshman Graham Waldron (94).
"We've got a good shot of sending at least two of our kids to the state tournament with Daniel and Tucker, but they both will have to play well to make it," added Sims. "We're also hoping to see the other three play well and hopefully advance too. Just making it to the region tournament is a great honor and it will be a great learning experience for all of our kids."
