At the Shelter

Thursday, October 4, 2012

"Their affection is timeless, their devotion is ageless, and their love is forever. Adopt a senior pet." ~ PALS

How I Wish ...

What would I give to be able to hear you just one more time.

The soft sigh of your breath on my arm as you gently would

nudge me to gain my attention.

The look in your eyes, as you would gaze up at me, full of

love and wonder...as if I was the greatest thing on earth.

The smell of your fur as I bury my nose deep into your neck.

How I wish I could do these things, just one more time.

How I wish, that I could look you in the eyes, just once more,

and whisper ... "I LOVE YOU."

Gracie
'Gracie' is the sweetest, most gentle dog at the shelter. She is quiet and settled and will make a perfect companion dog for some lucky person. She is a tri-colored Puggle (pug/beagle mix) designer dog. Gracie has been at the shelter for much too long. She is starting to give up hope of ever being adopted and now spends most days curled into a ball on her little blanket. She is overjoyed when someone stops at her run and pays attention to her. Some of our volunteers take her on walks and into the visitation room. She stays as close to them as possible, sitting there looking into their eyes, her eyes pleading, her tail slowly wagging. Gracie enjoys going on walks and being petted. Please adopt her and give this girly a second chance at life. She is at the shelter through no fault of her own.

Hilda
'Hilda' is a cute little dachshund mix. She, too, has been at the shelter much too long. Hilda is full of sunshine and happiness and loves attention. She makes you notice her, whether you want to or not! Visit the shelter and meet her.

Curly and Mo
'Curly' and 'Mo' are adorable kittens, full of cute kitty antics. Curly is an orange-and-white tabby and his brother, Mo, is a gray-and-white-striped tabby. Both are sweet as can be. They love to cuddle up to a soft, stuffed animal. All of our babies, whether kittens or puppies, are comforted by stuffed animals.

Mom and family
'Mom' is an elegant longhaired dilute calico who has six longhaired dilute kittens of various colors. This is one of the most beautiful kitty families at the shelter. All three cat rooms are full of fetching felines and several cute puppies. Check us out on dyerhumane.org or petfinder.com and type 38024 zip to see our shelter. Stop by The Pet Stop any day of the week to see a selection of shelter cats and kittens offered for adoption.

Make a difference in a shelter pet's life today. If you are looking for something worthwhile to do, volunteer and help a living, breathing animal, created by God. We need volunteers to walk our dogs, give baths and pet the cats. We are looking for people to put some time and love into increasing animals' adoptability through socialization. Join our special corps of fosters. Our fosters commit to a two-week period or longer. Many times we have pets who languish at the shelter. In order for a 501(c)(3) rescue to adopt the dog, they require a two-week quarantine (in foster care) before a dog can be transported. It takes a special sort of person to be a volunteer and/or foster pet parent. Stop by or call the shelter office at 285-4889.

If you can't foster or volunteer, there are many other ways you can help. We need dog blankets and bath towels, good-quality dog and puppy food, cat and kitten food, plus formula for both and pet bottles. The pets appreciate treats and toys, also. Please no small toys because the dogs will choke. Also no bead eyes, scarves, beanie babies, etc. that present choking hazards. Medium- and large-size stuffed animals/toys are needed. Puppies/kittens love to cuddle with soft medium- and large-size stuffed animals. It comforts them and they quit crying. Since we had a mild winter, fleas are very bad this year and we need Adams' Flea Mist for dogs/puppies and cats/kittens. We also need hand sanitizer, paper towels, office supplies, etc.

We depend on your donations to keep our doors open. Many people have the mistaken notion if they give to national organizations such as ASPCA, PETA, or HSUS that we receive part of the money. That is not true. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and not affiliated with any other organization or rescue group. Your tax-deductible donation to our shelter will help only Dyersburg/Dyer County homeless animals. Specify who your donation is to with complete address where notification or acknowledgment should be sent and your complete address. We will do the rest. Categories are: The Beagley Fund (heartworm treatment for shelter pets only), General Fund, Champ Lewis Fund (monetary adoption assistance), Save a Life Makeover (professionally clip and groom to make a pet more adoptable), Honorariums and Memorials. Mail to the Dyersburg/Dyer County Humane Society, P.O. Box 223, Dyersburg, TN 38025-0223. Thank you for helping the animals.

Shelter hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. The shelter is closed to the public on Sunday. We are located at 1120 E. Court St. and phone number is 285-4889.
