At the Shelter

Friday, November 30, 2012

If you can start the day without caffeine,

If you can get going without pep pills,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,

If you can overlook it when something goes wrong through no fault of yours and those you love take it out on you,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,

If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him,

If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,

If you can face the world without lies and deceit,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor,

If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

If you can honestly say that deep in your heart

you have no prejudice against creed, color, religion or politics,

Then my friend, you are almost as good as your dog.

Reminder: Santa Paws will be at The Pet Stop on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. to make photos with children and pets. Photos are only $8 each and make wonderful Christmas cards or keepsakes. All proceeds benefit the Dyersburg/Dyer County Humane Society and you will be helping local homeless pets. Please support this worthy cause!

'Duchess' is a beautiful little tri-colored beagle girly who is sweet and gentle. She loves for people to stop by her run and talk to her and hopes someone will give her the forever, loving home she deserves. She will make a fine family-type pet or companion dog. She is heartworm positive but can be easily cured with a monthly liquid dose of vet-prescribed Advantage Multi. Over a period of time it will kill the heartworms and also kills fleas but not ticks. Keep giving it so she won't be re-infected. Heartworms are caused by the bite of an infected mosquito and cannot be transferred to humans. 'Rooney' is a precious Yorkie mix who loves life and everyone he meets. He benefited from Save a Life Makeover Fund and was professionally clipped and groomed. I am pleased to say every pet has been adopted that had professional grooming through this fund. 'Lulu' is a beagle/feist/Australian shepherd who is 6 months old. This little cutie pie never meets a stranger and has a zest for life. She is a small dog and will be a perfect family or child's pet. 'Harvey' is a neat and tidy male rat terrier who has a docked tail. He has resigned himself to living at the shelter but still has a glimmer of hope someone will adopt him. He is a cute doggie and enjoys trotting around after you or riding with you in the car. He will make a perfect little housedog for some lucky person. We stay at capacity. Time is of the essence because we receive over 100 pets a week! We have many more wonderful pets at the shelter. Check us out on dyerhumane.org or petfinder.com and type 38024 zip to see our shelter. Better yet, visit the shelter. Stop by The Pet Stop any day of the week to see a selection of shelter cats and kittens offered for adoption.

We constantly beg for volunteers and fosters. You can make a huge difference in a homeless shelter pet's life. Join our team and be part of the solution. It's easy and fun to volunteer on your own schedule during shelter hours open to the public. In other words, there is no set time or schedule. Foster for a two-week period or more.

If you can't volunteer or foster, please donate. We depend on your donations to keep our doors open and things running smoothly. We need dog blankets, bath towels, no-tears pet shampoo, sweaters for our small dogs and puppies, good-quality dog and puppy food, cat and kitten food, plus formula for both and pet bottles. The pets appreciate treats and toys, also. Please, no small toys because the dogs will choke. Also no bead eyes/noses, scarves, beanie babies, etc. Medium- and large-size stuffed animals/toys are needed. The babies love to cuddle with a soft, stuffed animal. We are completely out! Since we had a mild winter, fleas are very bad this year and we need Adams' Flea Mist for dogs/puppies and cats/kittens. We also need paper towels, office supplies, hand sanitizer, etc. We ask visitors use hand sanitizer before and after they touch pets. We make every effort to keep our pets disease free. As soon as pets arrive at the shelter, they are given their first round of shots if they are old enough.

Your monetary donations are critically important to us. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Your tax-deductible donation to our shelter will only help Dyersburg/Dyer County homeless animals. Our shelter doesn't receive any help from national organizations such as ASPCA, PETA, or HSUS. Many of the homeless pets who arrive at the shelter have been abused or neglected and all were unwanted for some reason or another. We have been helping homeless pets for over 30 years. Specify who your donation is to with complete address where notification or acknowledgment should be sent and your complete address. We will do the rest. Categories are: The Beagley Fund (heartworm treatment for shelter pets only), General Fund, Champ Lewis Fund (monetary dog adoption assistance), Save a Life Makeover (professionally clip and groom to make a pet more adoptable), Honorariums and Memorials. I would like to mention that every dog who benefitted from Save a Life Makeover has been adopted. Please mail your tax-deductible check to the Dyersburg/Dyer County Humane Society, P.O. Box 223, Dyersburg, TN 38025-0223. Thank you for helping the animals.

Shelter hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. The shelter is closed to the public on Sunday. We are located at 1120 E. Court St. and phone number is 285-4889.
