Trends: According to the Federal-State Market News Service, compared
to two weeks ago before the holiday break, Slaughter cows steady to
1.00 higher. Bulls mostly steady. Steers/bulls 1.00 to 4.00 higher,
weights under 400 lbs 7.00 to 15.00 higher. Heifers 2.00 to 5.00
higher. Demand moderate to good.
Advances were seen on all weights as buyers eagerly secure numbers.
Boxed beef prices continue to struggle for upward mobility with Thursday
cutout value at 196.03 on choice and 174.90 on select, a 21.13 spread
between choice and select. Typically this time of year, demand centers
on higher quality cuts for holiday meals. Moisture is still limited in
many grazing areas of the country which makes it difficult to see why
calf prices are advancing. Warmer temps forecast into next week with
slight rain chances for the Tennessee area. Recently, rain amounts have
been light throughout the state.
Slaughter Cows 735 head; Bulls 113 head; Total Feeders 5,509 head;
Feeder supply, Steers and bulls 3,290 head; Heifers 2,219; Steers
and heifers over 600 lbs 1,952; Replacement and/or feeder cows 427
head.
