Former Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller, the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history, will be the keynote speaker for the sixth anniversary Healthy Woman Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013. Dyersburg Regional Medical Center Director of Marketing Melissa Caldwell announced the 2013 Healthy Woman calendar of events at Monday evening's 'A Very Merry Healthy Woman Christmas.' Two lucky members were treated to free tickets to the event as door prizes at the end of the evening.
Dyersburg Regional Medical Center Marketing Director Melissa Caldwell gave Healthy Woman members an early Christmas present on Monday evening.

Local ladies who gathered at the Lannom Center for "A Very Merry Healthy Woman Holiday" received a sneak peak at Healthy Woman's 2013 calendar of events. And with a little holiday fanfare, Caldwell announced Olympian Shannon Miller will serve as the featured speaker for Healthy Woman's sixth anniversary event next fall.

Miller, the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history and the only female athlete inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, was diagnosed in January 2011 with ovarian cancer after her physician discovered a baseball-size cyst during a routine exam. She exhibited no symptoms before her diagnosis. She is now an advocate for early detection.

Today, Miller serves as president of Shannon Miller Lifestyle: Health and Fitness for Women and as president of the Shannon Miller Foundation, an organization dedicated to fighting childhood obesity. She is an author, a television personality and a radio host. Miller has authored a series of fitness books and cookbooks, and offers a line of fitness DVDs, a free online fitness tracking and incentive program and a free eBook titled, "Competing with Cancer." Also a busy wife and mother, Miller received a clean bill of health in September 2011.

Miller will be the keynote speaker at DRMC's sixth annual Healthy Woman Anniversary event on Saturday, Oct. 19. The evening is the only event on the Healthy Woman calendar with an admission fee. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale in mid-July.

Other events planned for the 2013 Healthy Woman season include:

* Hula Hoopin' Healthy Heart -- 5:30-7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12

Held at the Lannom Center, Healthy Women members will learn about heart health in the first event of the New Year. Members will also take part in a hula-hoop contest.

* Ahhhhh ... Healthy Woman Spa Day -- 3-4:30 p.m., Saturday, April 27

The Lannom Center will host a few hours of pampering and shopping for Healthy Women members attending the program's April session. On the agenda, the ever-popular 'bra lady', massages, aromatherapy, paraffin wax, make-up demonstrations and much more.

* All About Your Period. Period -- 3-4:30 p.m., Saturday, June 1

This mother-daughter event is slated for McIver's Grant Public Library's new facility. Young ladies and their mothers will enjoy High Tea, a hat contest and an informative discussion about menstrual cycles and other important information for young women. Story time will also be available for younger children in the children's area of the library during the event.

The first three events of the 2013 Healthy Woman season are listed on DRMC's Healthy Woman website. Registration is open for members at http://www.dyersburgregionalmc.com/Healt....

While the rest of the 2013 calendar is nearly complete, Caldwell still has some 'tweaking' to do. She gave general information on the rest of the events, which have not been included on the website.

In August, Healthy Women members will experience the program's first-ever Date Night, with a focus on men's health issues. The 2013 season will conclude with the sixth anniversary event on Saturday, Oct. 19 and the Christmas event on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
