Dyersburg man killed in New Year's Day accident in Lauderdale County

Thursday, January 3, 2013

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating one of the first deaths of the New Year after a 25-year-old Dyersburg man was killed in Lauderdale County on Tuesday.

Joshua Ward was reportedly killed just one minute after midnight on Tuesday on Highway 51 after he came out of Hick's Bar near Halls, Tenn. and was struck by a Ford F-150.

THP Trooper Mark Williams stated in his report of the accident that Ward came out of Hick's Bar and was walking in lane No. 2 northbound on Highway 51. He was then hit by a 46-year-old Halls, Tenn. man driving a 2012 Ford F-150. The driver reportedly did not see Ward walking in the roadway. Ward was pronounced dead at the scene.

Williams' report states Ward had been drinking and the driver of the truck had not. However, drug and alcohol tests have been requested for both of them.

The driver was not issued a citation and there are no pressing criminal charges.

Editor's note: A representative of the bar stated Ward was not served any alcohol at the establishment that evening and that he had only been there about 20 minutes before the accident happened.
