Receipts on 12 TN Auctions: 10,009 3 Last Week: 1,757 12 Last Year: 9,648
Trends: Most sales were closed last week so trends could not be
established.
The beginning of the 2013 marketing season showed fairly large movement
in auctions across the state with the average receipts at 833 head on 12
reported sales. All classes of livestock witnessed price improvement when
compared to the last marketing week reported of 2012. Slaughter cows 1.00
to 3.00 higher. Bulls 3.00 to 4.00 higher. In the feeder classes,
steers/bulls were 3.00 to 7.00 higher, heifers 3.00 to 6.00 higher. Not
bad considering much of the U.S. remains below normal in precipitation
and feed costs remain elevated.
If you were wondering how January 2013 compares to January 2012, steers
and bulls are 5.00 to 10.00 higher, instances 16.00 higher on lightweight
offerings and heifers anywhere from 4.00 to 12.00 higher. So we start out
the new year with a bang as we continue push prices on calves and
yearlings higher. How much higher prices can go is yet to be seen. Calves
suitable for grazing, if there are areas to graze, may find additional
strength, yearlings will be tied more closely to the fed cattle futures
which showed April near 137.00 on Monday and down to 135.00 by Friday and
a live market that lost 2.00 to 4.00 this week with fed cattle at
$125.00-126.00.
Beef demand at higher priced retail levels still remains a concern for
the industry. Consumers on tight budgets already express concern over
current retail beef prices and if and when fed cattle find their way into
the 130s, that very consumer may find chicken, pork or fish are the only
items they can afford.
Slaughter Cows 985 head; Bulls 158 head; Total Feeders 8,116 head;
Feeder supply, Steers and bulls 4,637 head; Heifers 3,479; Steers
and heifers over 600 lbs 2,410; Replacement and/or feeder cows 750
head.
