Dyersburg and Dyer County Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 16, due to icy road conditions. As a precaution, Dyersburg City Schools and Dyer County Schools dismissed classes at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in order to be able to get kids home safely before the severe weather moves into the area. All athletic events for this evening including basketball games at Dyersburg High School and Dyer County High School have been cancelled.
Dyer County Roads Superintendent says his department's trucks are on ready and standing by. County crews will be available to salt roads once the event has mostly subsided. Jones says that crews will address the trouble areas first, such as hills and bridges.
The city of Dyersburg also has its crews on standby and has activated its emergency winter weather plan. City crews have already salted some roadways and they will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate action as needed.
"We advise residents to pay attention to the latest forecasts as weather can change unexpectedly," said Mark Grant, director of emergency operations for Dyersburg. "Motorists should use extreme caution later today as surface streets and bridges will be slick in some places later this afternoon. Anyone that can stay indoors and avoid travel is encouraged to do so."
Community events cancelled for Tuesday evening include:
* All athletic events at Dyersburg High School and Dyer County High School have been cancelled
* Rainbow Gymnastics Center has cancelled all activities for this afternoon
