Receipts on 12 TN Auctions: 5007 12 Last Week: 10,473 11 Last Year: 8400
Trends: According to the Federal-State Market News Service, compared
to last week, Slaughter cows and bulls steady. Steers/bulls 3.00 to
10.00 lower, light calves 15.00 lower. Heifers 3.00 to 6.00 lower, once
again some of the lighter offerings 10.00 lower.
After literally a week or so of rain and totals in the 4 to 7 inch range,
cattle producers found little incentive to fight the mud and weather to
move cattle to market. Auction receipts were extremely light and with the
inclement weather and declining cattle futures, calf and yearling markets
posted sharp declines where tested. Wednesday and Thursday saw cattle
futures, both in the live and feeder contracts, lose considerable ground.
On Thursday, reports of a Texas slaughter plant going ideal due to a
shortage of cattle may be partly to blame for sharp declines on that day.
Nevertheless, this depressive move will most likely put additional
pressure on feeder cattle in the upcoming week. Clear weather in the
forecast, but it will take several days for farm lots to dry out.
Slaughter Cows 478 head; Bulls 71 head; Total Feeders 4,128 head;
Feeder supply, Steers and bulls 2,436 head; Heifers 1,592; Steers
and heifers over 600 lbs 1,420; Replacement and/or feeder cows 330
head.
