It's not spring yet, but the midsouth is bracing for some unusual spring-like weather including a moderate chance for tornados beginning later this evening and extending overnight. The National Weather Service raised the tornado condition (TOR CON) threat level from 4 to 6 late this afternoon indicating that conditions are favorable for a moderate chance of a tornado threat. Hail and high wind gusts are also possible for this evening. Hail as large as one-inch in diameter is also possible throughout West Tennessee with 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. being the timeframe most likely for severe weather.
According to the NWS, the severe weather is being caused by a cold front moving in from the west that is colliding with the warm air that has settled into the region. Temperatures throughout the south today averaged 22 degrees above normal for this time of year.
Residents are urged to use extreme caution if traveling this evening and continue to monitor weather conditions as forecasts can change at a moments notice.
