Dyer County Sheriff's deputies responded to a local gun shop on Wednesday morning after an employee accidentally shot himself.
According to Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box, deputies were dispatched to Old South Trading Co. around 8:45 a.m. on Wednesday in reference to a gunshot victim. Deputies arrived and spoke with business owner Jimmie Anderson to assess the incident. He stated a customer brought in a Sig Sauer 9 mm handgun to be repaired and an employee was handling it when it discharged into the employee's left hand.
Deputies observed the 69-year-old employee, from Obion, Tenn., lying on the floor behind the counter with a towel wrapped around his left hand.
The customer who brought the weapon in told deputies he unloaded the magazine from the gun, but evidently there was still one round in the chamber. The customer stated the employee had his hand over the end of the barrel when it discharged.
The victim was transported to Jackson/Madison County Hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.
