Plenty of 4A foes for Dyersburg football on 2017 schedule
With last fall’s reclassification throughout the TSSAA’s sporting world, there was a very good chance the 2017 schedule for many teams would look much different than last year’s slate and Dyersburg’s upcoming gridiron calendar fits that.
In fact, there are only three holdovers on the Trojans 2017 schedule from their 10-3 slate last season.
Of those three, the Trojans get one out of the way right off the bat as Dyersburg opens with a home game against MLK-Prep from Memphis for the third straight season. Dyersburg has won each of the last two meetings with the Rams by a combined score of 121-6.
Week 1 is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 18.
The Trojans will see the other two returning to the Dyersburg slate from the last cycle during the last three games of the season.
In Week 9, Dyersburg will host Ripley in a battle of traditional Highway 51 rivals. The Trojans have won the last six meetings with the Tigers dating back to 2010.
Two weeks later, the Trojans will close their regular season when they host the Crockett County Cavaliers. The Trojans have split the last two meetings with Crockett County, winning last season at home 41-15.
Those two games, in fact, comprise half of the Trojans’ 7-4A schedule as the Cavs and Tigers are once again regional foes for the Trojans.
Joining them in the Trojans’ Region 7-4A will be two teams Dyersburg fans are familiar with.
Dyersburg opens Region play in Week 3 on Sept. 1 when the Trojans travel to Troy to face Obion County Central. The Rebels return to Dyersburg’s schedule after last facing the Trojans in 2014 when Dyersburg won 44-7.
Two weeks later, Dyersburg makes its second region road trip in three weeks as the Trojans travel to Brownsville to face Haywood in 7-3A action. Dyersburg last faced the Tomcats in 2014, winning 39-18 in Brownsville. Haywood was last a regional foe for Dyersburg in 2012.
The Trojans non-region schedule looks to be pretty tough as four of the six reached the playoffs in 2016, as MLK-Prep (Week 1) and Chester County (Week 10) did not advance to the postseason.
After the season opener with the Rams, Dyersburg hosts Brighton on Aug. 25. The Cardinals were 7-4 last season and lost to Henry County in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs.
The Week 3 game will be the first time Dyersburg faces Brighton in varsity football.
Two weeks later, the Trojans return to non-region play when they host another black and gold Trojan team as Dyersburg faces Millington on Sept. 8. Millington lost in the first round of the 4A playoffs to Haywood.
This will be the first matchup between the two Trojan teams in the last 20 years.
Like Dyersburg, Millington is a Class 4A team, residing in Region 8.
Jackson North Side will return to Dyersburg’s schedule this upcoming season as the Trojans travel to Jackson to the Reservation to face the Indians in Week 6 action on Sept. 22. North Side lost to Memphis East in the Class 4A opening round this past season.
Dyersburg last faced North Side in 2013 in the second round of the playoffs, winning 37-14 over the Indians. The Indians were on the Trojans’ schedule last in 2010.
The Indians, as well as Chester County, are both teams from Region 6-4A.
The Trojans will return from a Week 7 bye when they face Bolivar in non-region action on Oct. 6. the Tigers lost to Milan in the opening round of last year’s Class 3A playoffs.
Dyersburg last played Bolivar in 2008, winning 44-32.
