DSCC to offer college program to local prison
Wednesday, February 1, 2017
On Jan. 17, at the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee, Dyersburg State Community College reinitiated what had been a successful and meaningful college-in-prison program during the 1980s and early 1990s. The federal Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (1994) made prisoners ineligible for Pell grant funding. As a result, the DSCC program at Northwest ended, but not before they had graduated 50 inmates. Due to a partnership with the Tennessee Higher Education Initiative (THEI), DSCC is able to get back to a community initiative they continue to feel passionate about.
