An incident on Thursday afternoon involving deputies from the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department and a man reportedly from New Orleans, Louisiana has resulted in the death of the suspect.

According to the TBI, Rodney James Hess, 36, parked his vehicle and was blocking traffic on the Hwy. 412 East ramp. Deputies responded to the scene where Hess reportedly became erratic, according to TBI spokesman Josh DeVine.

Officers on the scene reportedly communicated to the TBI that Hess was making erratic statements while refusing their commands.

According to the TBI, Hess attempted on two occasions to run over officers before a member of the CCSO fired through the windshield, reportedly striking Hess. Despite being shot, Hess drove a short distance before crashing in a ditch on the opposite side of the roadway.

Hess was airlifted to the Med in Memphis where he ultimately died from the injuries suffered during the incident.

TBI officials continued their investigation into the late hours on Thursday.
