On Saturday, March 4, the 2017 Davy Crockett District Pine Wood Derby races occurred at the center court of the Dyersburg Mall. Sixty-five Cub Scouts, along with approximately 150 family members, friends, and spectators, gathered together to watch the races and enjoy the friendly competition.

Cub Scouts representing various packs from the area were Pack 41 from Dyer, Pack 259 of Kenton, Packs 252 and 357 of Union City, and Pack 52 of Bradford.

Dyersburg was well represented, as 3 Packs from the city were present; Pack 87, sponsored by Dyersburg First United Methodist Church, Pack 88, sponsored by Cumberland Presbyterian as well as host pack for the event, and Pack 282.

Pack 88 provided the track and the manpower to make the race possible.

“The race is an annual, traditional event,” stated Boy Scouts of America West Tennessee Area Council District Executive Jim Drake. “It’s a family-bonding event. It becomes a family endeavor that everyone looks forward to.”

Each scout, along with the help of family members, created their own racers by hand, which had to adhere to specific guidelines set by the Boy Scouts of America.

“They take a block of wood, and make the car,” added Drake. “It’s pine. That’s why it’s called a pine wood derby.”

He added that the most popular car design was the wedge shape.

According to Drake, the track used for the races for many years was made of wood; however, recently, they have been replaced with an aluminum track complete with built in electronic scoring and timing capabilities. Most aluminum tracks are 45 feet in length, and the cars’ starting point sits roughly 4 feet from the ground.

Weigh-in of the handmade racers began at 8 a.m., and by 9 a.m., the competition was underway. The event was completed by 11:30 a.m.
