Eagles drop two of three to Southwest TN
The Dyersburg State baseball team had a tough weekend in Millington, dropping two games in a three-game set on Saturday and Sunday against Southwest TN.
The Eagles won the opening game of the set, taking a 9-2 win on Saturday but the Saluqis took the Sunday doubleheader, winning 10-3 and 13-11 to close out the series 2-1.
The Eagles are 7-6 on the season after this past weekend’s action.
DSCC 9, SWCC 2
Dyersburg State set the tone early, scoring four in the second on the way to a seven-run win in the opening game of the series on Saturday.
After a scoreless opening frame, the Eagles added a four-spot in the second. Bryce O’Brien hit into a fielder’s choice which scored two runs to put DSCC on the board. Daino Deas doubled in another run then Reed Smith singled in another to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half.
Dyersburg State tacked on a run in the fifth with a solo homerun by Chandler Adkins to push the Eagle lead to 5-0.
The Eagles scored a trio of runs in the sixth, getting RBI doubles from O’Brien and Smith as well as a one-run single from Deas to push the Dyersburg State advantage to 8-0 after the top of the sixth.
Dyersburg State added another run in the seventh when Andrew Swanson scored on a wild pitch to push the Eagle lead to nine.
Though the Saluqis added a pair of the runs in the ninth, Tristan Dobbs got out of the inning with a strikeout to seal the win for the Eagles.
Williams Woods picked up the win for the Eagles, pitching seven scoreless innings while striking out five and allowing only four hits.
Swanson and Smith led the way for the Eagles as each had a double and two singles.
SWCC 10, DSCC 3
The Saluqis returned the favor on Sunday in the opening game of the doubleheader, scoring seven in the fourth to propel Southwest TN to the win.
The Eagles scored first, getting a Smith groundout to score a run in the third then a Swanson homer in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead after the top of the fourth.
But, Southwest’s offense exploded in the bottom of the inning, scoring seven runs on six hits and a pair of walks to take a 7-2 lead after four.
The Eagles got one of those back in the fifth when Swanson scored on a wild pitch, but the Saluqis added a three-run Estrada homer in the bottom of the frame to help seal the win.
Swanson led the way for the Eagles with a single and a homerun during the loss.
SWCC 13, DSCC 11
Both offenses showed off their skills during the final game of the doubleheader as the two teams combined for 24 runs on 25 hits as Southwest took the win to close out the series.
The Eagles got on the board early, getting a fielder’s choice from Adkins to take a one-run lead after a half inning.
Southwest took the lead in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs but Dyersburg State added three in the third with a Ladarius Williams RBI double and a two-run homer from Spencer Yankle to take a 4-2 lead.
But, the Saluqis added 11 runs over the next three innings while the Eagles only mustered seven as Southwest took the win to complete the series victory.
Deas had a trio of singles as six Eagles had multiple hits during the loss.
Dyersburg State returns to the field on Friday when they host Vol State at 1 p.m. in the first of a three-game set.
