Choctaw soccer season comes to a close in first round
The Dyer County soccer season came to a close on Thursday night in Munford as the Choctaws fell to the Cougars 3-0 in the first round of the District 14AAA Tournament.
Munford took a 2-0 lead at the half before tacking on another goal late to secure the win and advance to the next round of the tournament.
Following the season-ending loss, Dyer County head coach Cody Williams talked about the progress his team has made through the 2018 season.
“If you look at us and how we were at the beginning of the season and how we are now, I thought we grew a lot,” Williams said. “As a team, as far as having a team mentality and team chemistry, I think this has been the best team I have had since I have been here.
“That includes team work and that family mentality. I told the team after the game that their leadership is the reason we’ve had that mentality.”
The loss brings an end to the high school careers of Choctaw seniors Luke Tyler, Will Jackson, Trent Yuhas, Cole Piskorski and Michael Roberts.
“It’s always heartbreaking to lose that last game to a district rival,” Williams said.
Williams added the team has several key pieces coming back for 2019.
“When it’s all said and done and looking to next year, while we are losing several valuable pieces to the team once they graduate, we will be returning the majority of the starters from this year’s team,” the Choctaw head coach said. “That is something that I am excited about.”
