At approximately 9:35 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8, Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to a 1-vehicle car crash resulting in the fatal injury of a 20-year old woman from Montgomery County.

According to THP Trooper Jerry Mealer, the driver was traveling northbound in the right lane on US 51 in a 1996 black Ford Explorer at the time the incident occurred.

Mealer says the victim reportedly swerved the vehicle off of the left side of the roadway near the 20-mile marker, causing it to overturn multiple times before coming to a stop in the southbound lane.

Mealer says the driver was ejected from the vehicle at some point during the roll over.

Newbern Police Department, Constable Randy Wolf and deputies of the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office closed down both northbound and southbound lanes of the highway for nearly 3 hours as first responders and THP assessed the scene.

While THP continues to investigate the incident, the cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

The State Gazette will provide updates as more information becomes available.
