Trojans continue preseason at Milan
Dyersburg High School continued to move through its preseason schedule on Friday evening, traveling down to Milan for the Trojans' second scrimmage of the year.
According to Dyersburg Head Coach Bart Stowe, he and his staff so both sides of the coin during their workout with an always tough Milan team.
“We definitely saw some improvements in some areas and we saw some areas where we've got to keep working on as far as turnovers, our assignments, and pad level,” Stowe explained. “Offensively, we can't turn the ball over.
“Defensively, we've got to keep working on our assignments and our fundamentals. Our tackling and our team pursuit – we've got to keep working their.”
Stowe is known to put a lot of emphasis on practice and the 16th-year head coach said he was looking forward to practice on Monday to continue working out the kinks with the Trojans.
The Trojan head coach saw improvement in the offensive line but added, overall, there is still work to be done.
“We're just a few steps away,” Stowe pointed out. “You look at our team. In the grand scheme of things – offense, defense, and special teams – we're definitely not there in the whole picture of it.
“We're taking steps. We may be one player short of making a block. Just a step here or a step there. It's definitely a fundamental thing of our defensive techniques, our offensive techniques, and our special teams to just keep getting better.”
Staying the course with their improvement over the course of the coming weeks is very important to the Trojans' development.
“You've got to understand that,” Stowe added. “The thing about football – it's a lot about preparation.
“Staying the course preparing on Monday through Thursday to play on Friday. You practice a whole lot and you play one game a week. We've got to stay the course and take advantage of opportunities and keep getting better. Each week is so important. Every day of practice and every game – keep taking that step up the ladder.”
The Trojans will wrap up the preseason on Friday when Dyersburg hosts the annual J.C. Sawyers Stadium for the annual STAR Physical Therapy-West Tennessee Bone and Joint Clinic High School Football Jamboree. Dyersburg closes out that night when the Trojans take on Obion County in the fourth and final matchup of the evening. The Trojans will begin the season with a three-game road trip which sees Dyersburg travel to Dyer County on Aug. 23 for the season opener with the Choctaws.
