The Dyer County girls soccer team fell to 0-2 on the year on Tuesday, dropping a 9-2 decision to visiting South Gibson in Newbern.

The Lady Hornets were the second defending state semifinalist the Lady Choctaws faced to open the season, falling 7-0 last week in Martin against Westview.

South Gibson jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first half before an Alayna Leedy goal off an assist by Lennon Brooks cut the Lady Hornet deficit to 6-1 late in the first half.

Dyer County's second game came in the 79th minute as Brooks broke free for a goal to cut South Gibson's lead back to 9-2 at the end of the game.

First-year Dyer County Head Coach Stephen Goodman said he wanted his girls to just keep growing after the tough start to the season.

“Take the small victories where you can,” Goodman explained. “(The Lady Hornets) are a great club. But, we didn't get mercy-ruled and we did walk away with a couple points. We have a lot to build off of.”

During the last three regular season meetings between the Lady Choctaws and Lady Hornets, Dyer County was shut out in each and mercy-ruled in one of the three. Freshman Leedy's goal late in the first half ended a streak of over six halves without a goal by the Lady Choctaws in District 13AA play against South Gibson.

“We have some great freshmen coming up on this team and we're proud of them,” Goodman added.

Dyer County returns to action on Monday when the Lady Choctaws host Obion County Central at 6 p.m. in Newbern.
